3. Link: The Lost Queen by Aimee Phan
4. Read the e-book: 368 pages
5. History
6. High-schooler Jolie believes that she is beginning to see the future like her Grandfather-who is not suffering from dementia. What she doesn't realize is that it's soooo much mortle than that. Goes into mythology/history of Ancient Vietnam quite a bit.
1. Badge 1, Book 52. List 1, Task 2
3. Link: The Names by Florence Knapp
4. Read the e-book: 336 pages
5. Childhood
6. When Cora's son is born, she's faced with a dilemma. Her controlling husband wants to name the baby after him. Her young daughter has another name choice. She has a third. The book splits into three different storylines at that point, and moves forward through the son's life based on the three different name changes. It really makes you think about choices, and how they may effect the future.
1. Badge 1, Book 62. List 1, Task 4
3. Link: Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer
4. Read the e-book: 448 pages
5. Fantasy
6. Tessa lives in a society where a mysterious illness is killing a large number of people in her community. There is a medicine available that prevents the illness, but it's scarce and being monopolized by the wealthy. Tessa, and her friend Weston Lark, are smugglers-stealing medicine from the rich to save the common folk. A fun little "Robin Hood" retelling.
1. Badge 1, Book 72. List 1, Task 5
3. Link: The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden
4. Read the e-book: 325 pages
5. Ghosts
6. Laura is a combat medic during WW1. Her beloved younger brother, Freddie, is serving. The book basically follows Laura and Freddie's ultimate goal to re-unite after Freddie is injured during the war. There is a literal ghost: Laura is haunted by her mother, who died tragically. Laura was unable to save her. But there is also some hypothetical ghosts that follow the characters from their own war-time experiences.
I'm considering The Warm Hands of Ghosts for this month's monthly challenge. It keeps popping up and I see it mentioned quite often. What did you think of it?
Janice wrote: "I'm considering The Warm Hands of Ghosts for this month's monthly challenge. It keeps popping up and I see it mentioned quite often. What did you think of it?"I gave it 4 stars. The writing is beautiful, and the characters are relatable. I truly didn't want to leave those characters. It is very very dark though. Not just the wartime scenes, but it digs into some very serious aspects of mental health
1. Badge 1, Book 72. List 1, Task 14
3. Link: Come Tumbling Downby Seanan McGuire
4. Read the e-book: 206 pages
5. Villainy
6. The series follows a group of children who experience a phenomena of finding a specific "door" in unassuming places. These doors lead to alternate worlds where the children experience belonging unlike what they have felt in their "birth worlds". This specific book follows a character named Jack who returns to their "birth world" so that she can get help to vanquish her sister who is still in "The Moors" (the world their door leads to.) It fits the category, for me, because honestly Jack would be considered a villain in most stories. In this book, she is a protagonist, which was a changed aspect that I enjoyed.
1. Badge 1, Book 82. List 1, Task 3
3. Link: The Ballad of Bonaventure Palmier by Adam Sockel
4. Read the e-book: 348 pages
5. Dogs
6. This book follows a famous clothier, who uses a bit of magic to create clothing unlike anything seen before. After a horrible tragedy, the clothier and his grandson leave with a traveling circus, where he helps to create costumes for the performers. During the story, the clothier's childhood dog is brought back to life in a "ghost" form. The dog, Holden, then follows along with the grandson (and eventual great-grandson) throughout his life.
