Question of the week: What are your first impressions of Maxim de Winter and the narrator’s relationship? Does it feel romantic, unsettling, or something in between?

I am a hint behind, but should catch up tonight.

My vote is unsettling. For me, all of the gaps of the wedding and honeymoon details add to the illusion of a loving marriage. And Maxim becomes more aloof, if possible once at Manderly. I’m definitely getting The Others vibes.

Definitely unsettling. He’s cold, aloof, he answers when he wants to, pressures the narrator into situations and so comes out as a trickster, as untruthful.
