Last October I read Dracula for the first time and loved it! I'm not big on classics so I was avoiding Bram Stoker. How foolish. I decided last year that every October I would re-read Dracula. Over the year, I became more and more eccentric. Now I have a list of Dracula books to be read in a specific order for optimum experience. I have a stack of movies, And I even planned a feast to celebrate October Dracula Month... should I mention I have a black tiara to wear during my feast? Here's my list!!

BOOKS:

The Undying of Dracula
Dracul
Dracula
Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Tales
The Last Voyage of Demeter: The Terrifying Chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula
Powers of Darkness: The Lost Version of Dracula
The Journal of Professor Abraham Van Helsing Renfield: Slave of Dracula
Dracula the Undead
Dracula: The Undead
Dracula, My Love: The Secret Journals of Mina Harker
Dracula's Child
Stoker's Manuscript
The Historian

MOVIES:

Dracula (1931 with Bela Lugosi)
Nosferatu (1922)
Bram Stoker's Van Helsing (2020)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Dracula Untold (2015)

FEAST:

French Onion Tart
Cheddar Herb Soda Bread
Maple Dijon Roasted Carrots
Rosemary Apple Cider Chicken with Stuffing and Cranberry Jelly
Devil Food Cake with Raspberries
Cranberry and Orange Juice Mocktail
Salted Maple Citrus Mocktail
Mulled Wine Cider

Drew | 14 comments @Jeni I really liked Dracula especially reading it the first time!! If you want to add a movie to your list, I can suggest Dracula’s Widow (1988)

Jeni | 99 comments Mod
@Drew Oh yes please suggest a movie! I'll go look it up now! Thank you.

@LePossume I can tell you this after day one- I'm not doing all this next year. It was worse than cooking for Thanksgiving.

E. Thompson | 1 comments I think this is a lovely little ritual (complete with black tiara!) 🖤. Dracula has been on my to-read list for so long.

Thank you E. Thompson. And welcome to the club.

Carl Rönne | 24 comments I actually started reading dracula less than a month ago but the characters felt a little dull, is it worth it to continue reading? I have half the book left

@Carl, welcome and I agree, the characters are a bit flat. What I love about it is the atmosphere and the story line.

message 10: by Carl (new)

Carl Rönne | 24 comments the story line is nice, it does kind of feel like you being drawn into the world and I really like the part where hes in the castle, then it got a bit interesting because you could feel the stress of there not being enough time to escape, sorry if i am ranting btw but then the characters allt started feeling overly optimistic, like everyone just becomes this therapist for each other and it just felt artificial, what about the story line do you like the most?

message 11: by Carl (new)

Carl Rönne | 24 comments without spoiling if you can i haave only read half

This is a silly reason but what stood out first was that it was set up differently than the writing styles from books written today. I'm used to plot and sub plots mixed throughout the entire book and it all comes to a conclusion by the end and neatly wraps up. Dracula it takes it one at a time. I thought that was very unique.

Have you met Van Helsing?

message 13: by Carl (new)

Carl Rönne | 24 comments Yes I have, and I recognize what you mean, I just read elantris by brandon sanderson who is very good at making evrrything come together at the end, I wish i had read the other half though because i dont know what you mean with things being unresolved, could you explain more without spoiling?

message 14: by Jeni (new)

Jeni | 99 comments Mod
I wish I knew more about how Van Helsing knows all that he does about vampires.

message 15: by Carl (new)

Carl Rönne | 24 comments it feels like more modern fantasy books explain more and its not as mystical, I read a lot of brandon sanderson anyway and then it feel more like some system then magic

I never heard of Brandon Sanderson. I was looking him up. He's written a lot of books. I'm just starting to get into fantasy. Is he easy to follow? I struggle with world building.

message 17: by Carl (new)

Carl Rönne | 24 comments 😵 never heard of him i envy you, he write like 4 books a year so you have many great books ahead of you. I honestly dont know if his books would be considered hard to follow, i dont think so, but you should read them either way, he is great at suspense and there is quite a lot of worldbuilding but it doesnt become too much, if you want more fantasy recomandations I am an expert

I tried to read Six of Crows. I read the first 2 chapters over and over. Then I picked up The Priory of the Orange Tree. That I finished and loved.

I'll take recommendations.

Carl Rönne | 24 comments Final empire
The way of kings
The eyes of the dragon
The princess bride
The name of the wind

i didnt want to add too many but basically all of robin hobb and sanderson is worth reading, I have also read the priory of the orange tree, it was cool but I like more the adventure vibe like the hobbit and the book I am reading now which is wizards first rule, what did you like about the priory of the orange tree?

DRAGONS! Love anything with dragons. The world and the characters were so real, I felt completely engrossed. The political part of the story was a bit over my head but it always is, even in reality. I liked the mythology built into the story and the discovery that truth and interpretation goes hand in hand.

The truth as to why I read it was because my sister and her friend were being rude. I saw the book was on sale and I said I wanted to get it. They kept going on and on about how big the book is and it's something they couldn't read so I definitely couldn't. WTF? I'm not stupid. So I definitely would be getting it after that comment. I loved the book.

message 22: by Carl (new)

Carl Rönne | 24 comments Haha I know the perfect book for you since you like dragons although you may read it already, Fourth Wing! its nice when you read a book and its good but it also shows how smart you are I have been trying to read war and peace so I can "accidentally" leave at my desk so everyone can see how cool I am😎 ok I have to sleep but it would be fun if this group had a book club section where we choose a book to read and then discussed it, if you or anyone else wants to read a fantasy book and then discuss it then that would be great!

message 23: by Jeni (new)

Jeni | 99 comments Mod
Great suggestion! I'll work on putting that together. I have Fourth Wing! My daughter stole it from me before I could start it. She still has it but now I'll be taking it back. Good Night.

I had this whole October Dracula theme plan and I have gotten so distracted with other books that I haven't even started. Instead, I have read through my entire Library Haul and will be getting a new stack tomorrow. Always happens this way.

I believe you still have a lot of time. Only half month is over now, you can still do it.

Anshika | 6 comments Could someone please encourage me to continue reading horror? I had planned a lot of spooky reads for this month, but I find myself reading more fantasy and graphic novels than I ever have in my life. I haven't even finished the Book of the Month yet.

@Anshika This isn't probably the encouragement you want but give your body what it wants! I am very much a mood reader. And I have completely ignored by planned reads. And it's all Sinead Hanna's fault (her Youtube book review link : https://www.youtube.com/@SineadHannaC...) Trust me she will get you hooked on reading horror again.

I saw some of her and videos and guess what? I think I need to read some horror RN (ignoring all my current reads). Thanks for the motivation and a new booktuber to binge watch. :)

@Anshika WELCOME!! Here's another channel I love to watch https://www.youtube.com/@thepastelboo... The Pastel Book Shelf. I can't get enough of either one. What book(s) are you going read?

Oooooo! That's a good one. I'll probably watch something after I finish some of my pending latest booktuber's videos.

Right now, I have to finish How to Sell a haunted house and a dozen spooky short stories in my TBR. After that, I can go to some thrillers.
