🛣️ If you are a planner, feel free to add books to the tracking sheet and claim tasks, but not more than 3-4 at a time, please.
Please make sure you also add other options your book works for. Once you finished a book, you can claim another task.
🌋If you are more of a mood reader it's enough to add the books as you start reading them or finish them, no hurry.
✅ Karen, Julia and I will try our best to make sure that your books get assigned to claimed tasks, but sometimes, to move forward and for the sake of points, we may need to play tetris, if its OK with you. We will let you know if some more targeted reading is needed, but otherwise will be happy to leave you to follow your own pace and mood. 😊
➕ If you are uncomfortable using spreadsheets, you are welcome to make completion posts in the thread and we will help you adding the books to the sheet. Just make sure you link the right edition of the book you read and list the options the book works for.
❓Feel free to ask any questions if you something is not clear.
❗And the MOST IMPORTANT: Have fun and read good books!! 📚 😊

🌋 Fellow Travelers, welcome to Team Tongariro Alpine Crossing! ⛰️Here, amid volcanic craters and emerald lakes, we’ll be walking one of the most iconic hikes of
The fact that Tongariro National Park doubled as Mordor and Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings films makes it even more epic—it’s like our team is marching straight into Middle-earth itself! ⛰️🔥 (If only!)
🎒 So, let's put on our reading boots and fill our backpacks with books overflowing with Is, Os, Us, Xes and Ys, etc. 😉
📚 I hope we become a Fellowship of Readers.
👁️ Our Journey, directed by the Madly Spinning Country Wheel and by our Creative Mods plotting mischief in their Dark Tower of Moderator-ness, promises all kinds of excitement, as usual. 😉
👋 Please introduce yourself and also feel free to answer the following questions. (Not necessary, though you may get a visit from a Nazgûl or 3. No pressure, obviously.)
🌍 Where are you journeying from?
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
(While I was writing the Qs, Sauron overtook the thread, so don't be surprised at what's coming.)

💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?

⚔️ If you needed rescuing,
Hello! wow here we are... wheel 10. Doesn't feel like that long ago we started the first one :o
🌍 Where are you journeying from?
Sydney, Australia. Currently into Spring and heading into Summer. Both my favourite times of year :)
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
Anna Karenina and Wuthering Heights were always my precious ones.
More contemporary preciousss would be Jonathan Strange
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
Dark chocolate. And diet coke. 😂
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
lol. I don't know actually. I am a bit of a pollyanna and get uncomfortable with villains. lol! Did make me think of Vicious though. I like anti-heroes
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
All the Terry Pratchett Discworld books I am yet to read!
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
I have a whole shelf of "gave up on", but the one that comes to mind is Jamie from Outlander
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
We have bushland near us that we walk though to get to the kids school and the local train station. It was a well-trodden path in lockdowns thats for sure!!
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
Probably not. I don't even know I could do the crossing full stop. haha
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
The Nazgûls always scared the crap out of me. So did the Orcs. So I guess it is Balrog 😁🤐

Hi team! Checking in! by the way I'm Christene, 29. 🌍 Where are you journeying from?
-- I'm from Philippines! Somewhere in Southeast Asia
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
-- I usually read fantasy, romance and thriller. I'm more into series than standalone. My fave authors are Kristin Hannah (Historical Fiction), Emily Henry (Romance), Brandon Sanderson (Fantasy), for thriller I'm juggling and love reading new to me authors.
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
-- I'm a pizza girl so I'll probably bring that one. and yes COKE!!
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
-- I can't think of a villain right now. I'll edit soon
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
-- I want to read LOTR, The Witchers and GOT.
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
-- All my DNF books!
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
-- Loved trekking when I was in college (5 years ago) but lately been busy with work and family. probably walking from my house to work! lol
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
-- Nope
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
-- None of the above lmao but maybe Balrog too
Here is my intro. ☺️🌍 Where are you journeying from?
- I am Melinda, Mel for short, from Hungary. Living in a small lakeside town not too far from the capital, Budapest.
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
Lots of favourite books
Classics - Jane Austen
Fantasy - Terry Pratchett, J.R.R. Tolkien (no big surprise there ;), Sharon Shinn
Historical Fiction - Dorothy Dunnett, Hilary Mantel, Georgette Heyer
History - Dan Jones, Ben Macintyre
UF - Ilona Andrews
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
- Coke, milk chocolate and "pogacsa" (cs is the sound for "ch" in Hungrarian). The latter is a small, scone-shaped (ish), salty pastry characteristic of our country, the Balkans and the Levant with various ingredients and modes of preparation. It can be prepared with cheese, cottage cheese, potatoes or even pork cracklings. And in HU folklore tales, the wanderers always take some with them when setting out on a journey - so ... sort of lembas, I guess. ☺️
I'd also carry some miniature coffee-making machine that could whip up cafe latte. ;)
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
Well, one of the vilest and most blood-chillingly epic villains for me is Gabriel Reid Mallet from the Lymond chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett. I wouldn't call him a favourite, but unforgettable, nevertheless.
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
There are so many, I guess there are whispers not only from the One Ring, but from the Three and all the others. 🤭
But it's probably Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes: The Official Biography. The reason I'm putting it off is because I know it will make me ugly cry.
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
Lots of books on my MEH and DNF -shelves, but the highlights.
- Labyrinth by Kate Mosse
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and especially Harry from it. (LOL)
- Winter's Heart from the Wheel of Time series
- The Golden Bowl by Henry James
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
- In Hungary, my university town (not too far from where we live) is built on hills and in valleys and there are lovely walks that feel like nature hikes,
- In and around one of my favourite places in the world, the city of Salzburg in Austria,
- Anything on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and
- Sadly, I don't think so. I'd love to give it a try, though. ;)
⚔️ If you needed rescuing,
- Orcs? Because they don't fly? :D
Otherwise it would be Sam Vimes from Discworld (aka my chosen literary husband - no, my real husband doesn't know about this crush of mine ;)
Hello Team Tongariro Alpine Crossing 😊Delighted to be co-captaining this challenge together with Mel and Karen.
🌍 Where are you journeying from?
I'm joining you guys from a small town in Austria.
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
I mostly read contemporary romance novels, although I do love to throw the odd fantasy novel in there to mix things up. As long as I'm getting good character development and a swoony love story, I'm a happy gal!
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
I love ice cream, but that might not be the best snack for the road... Fruit or chocolate, maybe?
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?"
Well... If we're talking Sauron from the Rings of Power series... Mmmmh, yes please!
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
Briar Prescott's and Tal Bauer's new releases that I haven't gotten around to reading yet. And Quicksilver, but I'm waiting for #2 to be published before I dive in.
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
Any book that features miscommunication and a third-act breakup. Such a lazy and unneccessary way to create additional drama. If I could, I'd yeet them all into Mount Doom and not regret it for one second.
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
I must say, nothing beats the walks in NZ. I lived there for a year 10 years ago. Never got to do the Tongariro Crossing, since the weather was really bad when I was on the North Island, so I guess I'll just have to go back at some stage. But yeah, definitely some great hikes there.
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
I like to think that I would. But maybe I'm just delusional. To be determined, I guess.
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
Nazgûl all the way! (Horse girlie here, so this is a non-brainer.)
Julia wrote: "⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?Nazgûl all the way! (Horse girly here, so this is a non-brainer.)."
😂 Love it!
We have two Claires on our team. Would either of you be okay with us adding the initial of your second name or something similar to your name on the spreadsheet so that we can tell you apart? It could also be a random letter or number or a nickname, anything at all, really. I was going to just add your country, but you're both from Belgium 😉
Hello Everyone, Nice to see some familiar names, and happy to get to know new wheels players ☺️
🌍 Where are you journeying from?
- I am Claire, from Brussels Belgium. Born and raised here
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
I like how Mel structured it by genre so I'll try to do the same (even though it stays hard !)
Classics - Jane Austen (I know, not very original)
Fantasy - The Lies of Locke Lamore by Scott Lynch
Urban Fantasy - I know it's a bit trashy but I'll always love the Anita Blake series
YA - Twilight, it's what got me into reading when I was a teen. It will always be precious to me.
Contemporary Romance: Ali Hazelwood, I love her books
Romantasy (I know some people in this group hate this term, I was one of them, but I somehow ended up adopting it): I can't quite say if I have a favourite yet. I just really like the genre, cliché trope and all.
MM Romance: NR Walker.
And of course, Harry Potter will always be precious to me.
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
- One of those Starbucks ice vanilla macchiato, and a pastry we call a "couque suisse" here (love them!) it means "Swiss pastry" even though they are Belgian. Go figure.
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
Umbridge. I just hate her so much. She's a really good villain in that way. haha
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
Oh no, you cannot ask me that ! Well I have so many unread book I feel almost ashamed of it. Which is why I'll never speak the number. A few that have been calling me recently are Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, The Will of the Many by James Islington, Katabasis by R.F. Kuang (more so to see what the fuss is about more than genuine interest in the book) and Alchemised by SenLinYu (although a bit scared of that one).
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
On the Road by Jack Kerouac. I tried many times but I just couldn't get into the writing.
James Joyce's Ulysses, and I know it has a cult following, but it just gave me a headache.
The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon, because of lit class trauma. I didn't understand that course I had a nervous breakdown over it.
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
I really like walking in the Forêt de Soignes. It's very peaceful.
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
- I know my limits, I know I would be one of the first to die. 😅
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
I guess I'll go for the Nazgûls, if I have to choose one of those.
Julia wrote: "We have two Claires on our team. Thank you for the Intro, Claire. Maybe loving JA is not original, but it's proof of (y)our exceptionally good taste. 🤭
And we appreciate the name change. 😊
Melindam wrote: "Thank you for the Intro, Claire. 😊Maybe loving JA is not original, but it's proof of (y)our exceptionally good taste. 🤭"
Haha, thanks. But considering there's Twilight and Anita Blake there as well I don't know if everyone would agree. I am very self aware, but you love what you love 🤷🏻♀️
ClaireB wrote: "Contemporary Romance: Ali Hazelwood, I love her books"That's awesome. I've only recently gotten into her books as I mainly read MM romance, but I'm obsessed! Currently listening to my second audiobook and I'm eating it up!
ClaireB wrote: "You can call me ClaireB. I don't mind. I'll change my profile name to avoid confusion for the duration of the challenge."That's great, Claire, thanks. I've already updated the tracking SS, so hopefully, there shouldn't be any mixups.
Talking of MM romance, while it's not my usual genre, I really enjoy KJ Charles' books. And, Julia, Tal Bauer was recommended to me by others, so I may try one of their books some time. :)
Hi! Also just checking in but will introduce myself properly later! This is going to be a great team 😃
Melindam wrote: "Talking of MM romance, while it's not my usual genre, I really enjoy KJ Charles' books. And, Julia, Tal Bauer was recommended to me by others, so I may try one of their books some time. :)"
K.J. Charles is the GOAT! I have yet to read a book by her that I don't adore.
Tal Bauer writes BIG love stories, and I totally get why some people call his books cheesy - I usually don't like too much of that either, but something about his books just works for me. Really looking forward to reading his new novel, especially since it's been a while since he's published anything, but it's freaking 810 pages long and I've been reading lots of long books lately. Might need a few shorter palate cleansers first before I tackle that behemoth.
Oh these answers are so much fun. Claire, thanks for changing your name. Quite a coincidence we both are from Belgium.
🌍 Where are you journeying from?I am from Antwerp, Belgium.
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
I love fantasy, thrillers, classics and contemporary literary fiction.
The Robin Hobb series are high on my top list. The The World According to Garp is one of my all time favourites as is Antigone, Madame Bovary and the Elly Griffiths crime series
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
Croissants or coconut cookies. And coffee, lots of coffee.
(While I was writing the Qs, Sauron overtook the thread, so don't be surprised at what's coming.)
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
I happily forget villains but Joffrey Baratheon en Pete littlefinger are bad enough to be remembered
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
The books which I am waiting for to be published: the ending of game of thrones series and of Patrick Ness’ trilogy
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
All the people that do very very stupid things in books. I sometimes yell at my books esp. when reading a thriller. If you hear something outside in the dark, stay inside!
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
I love to walk around in the city around the docks and in the medieval parts of it
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
Definitively not.
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
The Nazgûls, they are so mysterious.
Lovely to have you with us, Claire. 😊I have heard about the (in)famous Patrick Rothfuss, but haven't read any books by him.
🌍 Where are you journeying from? South Wales UK 💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
I am such a mood reader that I have a different favourite author or book every week lol, but if I was pushed I'd say someone like Nora Roberts or Tiffany D Jackson. I am also pretty much an exclusive audio reader, so my precious is probably going to be a narrator, and that would be the goddess that is January Lavoy 🥰
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
I am one of the weirdos that doesn't like chocolate or cakes/biscuits etc, I mean ... it's ok, but if I could never eat it again for the rest of my life I wouldn't care 🤷🏻 I would however, fight you for a tub of Pringles
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
I LOVE a female serial killer, so Deanna Madden from 6E or Gretchen from the Chelsea Cain series
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
I haven't read or watched Lord of the Rings which I *think* this is alluding to?? And I'm also assuming that it is that little weird goblin thing? In conclusion I think you mean what book do I love the most? In which case please refer to question 2 🥰 (I think I got away with that)
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
I live in South Wales, so we have lots of mountains and trails to walk, it is beautiful and green, however this is because it rains for about 350 days a year 😭
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
Umm wut???? 🤷🏻 I'm a weakling so ....no??
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
🤷🏻 I have no idea what they are so I'll choose the one that sounds badass and go with Balrog???
Balrog is the baddest ass, certainly! LolWelcome to the Team, V! 😊
Are you ok going with V or would you like us to call you something else?
Loving everyone's answers! My notifications aren't working for this specific thread which is a little on the highly annoying side.... so glad I popped in to check out the activity ;)
About to start my work day but then I will have a think about my first book for wheels. Probably Assassin's Apprentice as I need to read it for my closet challenge or fall beind

It is so weird. Julia and I also can't switch on notifications for our thread in the captains group so it is kind of like there was a point in time that GR decided for new threads you just need to guess when they are updated 😂 Hopefully is resolved soon!!

Hello everyone. I’m popping in from Canberra, Australia, to say hello and will answer the intro questions later. My son and his wife are in a kids band called The Vegetable Plot (check them out) and are here for the last shows of a tour before heading home to Sydney. I haven’t heard them live for a long time so I’m off to join the young parents and the under 7 brigade for some bad jokes and fun songs about veggies and fruit. Hahaha🥑🍆🍍🥕🎸🎶🎶
GR just gets weirder and weirder! (And I'm being v-v diplomatic here! 😅)While thankfully I'm getting notifications both for this thread and our captains one (must have turned them on before the bug set in), the only other team I get the notifications for here is Mullerthal Trail.
Very odd and annoying! 😡
Here I am again!I have been on teams with at least 4 of you before, but it's been a minute. Glad to "meet" you again, and to be teammates with the rest for the first time!
🌍 Where are you journeying from?
New York, New York. As in the actual Manhattan part!
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
I've been reading mostly sci-fi and fantasy for the past decade or so, but don't make me choose, lol.
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. But when I eventually get nauseated from eating too many, then apples.
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
Rather than a favorite (IDK if I'd be able to name one!) I will just say the very first one that popped into my mind, for some bizarre reason as this is kind of a deep cut:
The character Butterfield in the movie Lord of Illusions from 1995.
Srsly, IDK how that just popped into my brain. I used to love that movie as a teenager in the 1990s but I haven't seen it since like 1998 maybe. WTF, brain.
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
There are 3 books tied for "The Oldest Ones on my Goodreads TBR" and the one of them that whispers to me the most in the sense that at this point it's the least likely I'll ever actually read it but I still can't bring myself to take it off my TBR despite many purges of old TBRs: Graceling by Kristine Cashore
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
Oh gosh, anything I've rated 1 star? That's a hard question. Every book is somebody's baby... but I do wish some of those book babies hadn't been born.
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
My partner is from France and every couple of summers we do a sort of reunion thing with his family in Saint Malo, on the northern coast of Brittany (it's not where they're from, just where his mom's side of the family has been going on summer trips since the 1950s). My mostest favoritest walk is down the long beach and through the walled town there.
It's not the Road to Mordor but I'll tell you what was:
This one time my partner and I were on a road trip in Montenegro and we were stuck for a long time behind some kind of ancient black-smoke-belching roadworks truck on a high mountain pass. We legit thought the sky itself had turned black. I even remember saying "WE HAVE FOUND MORRRRDORRRRR" and my partner was like, "Shut up, nerd."
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
So, I think I'd be among the first to die in a Zombie Apocalypse, but somehow I might survive TAC through sheer stubbornness. I do be like that sometimes.
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
You mean to be rescued FROM? They're all pretty bad! The Balrog, maybe, just because I feel like it would be the coolest to see IRL before being rescued.
So funny to be talking about LoTR/The Hobbit because lately I have been randomly watching a bunch of old Lindsay Ellis videos about the movies. This team was my destiny!
Also, ditto about the notifications. Goodreads has decided this group doesn't count. Hope it resolves itself sooner than later.

So true! I can totally live with others disliking/hatin' some of my beloved books, so in return I'd like the same rights.
One reader's Love Boat may be another's Titanic. 🤭
And yes, you and this Team were totally meant to be. Sorry to hear about your Mordorous ;) trip!
🌍 Where are you journeying from?Canberra, Australia's capital.
💖 A book, author, or genre that’s always “preciousss” to you?
Nothing in particular. Depends how I'm feeling.
🍫 Optional snack check: if you were bringing second breakfast for the road, what’s in your pack?
Fruit, nuts, crackers, cheese. Water!
🧿“Who is your favourite villain… and why is it obviously Me, Sauron?”
There were some terrific villains in Game of Thrones.
💍 Which unread book on your shelf whispers to you most like the Ring?
At the moment, The Odyssey but I have it listed for one of my first books in this challenge.
🌋Which books/characters did you feel like throwing into Mount Doom?
My goodness I really disliked Daisy Jones and the Six, and Where the Crawdads Sing. Anna Karenina needed a good kick up the bum too.
🥾What’s your favourite real-life walk… and why is it clearly the Road to Mordor?
We really enjoy walking around the central basin of our city's Lake Burley Griffin. Beautiful views everywhere in all seasons.
🎒 Would you survive the Tongariro Alpine Crossing carrying Sam’s cookware set and Frodo’s the Mighty Lord Sauron's Ring?
Hmm I'm no hiker but I'd love to give it a go, Maybe the aging body would say no somewhere along the way though. NZ weather is fickle too so that's offputting,
⚔️ If you needed rescuing, which literary character(s) would you choose would you choose the Nazgûls, the Balrog or the Orcs?
None of those would come rescuing anyone would they? Or I am not understanding the question?
