When is a good time to publish the next book in a series?

I'd say around Christmas - That's when it'll get the most sales; If not, maybe publish around a time that fits the books theme e.g. a summer based book in summer.
Laura,I would suggest putting the second one up for pre-order with a delivery date of anywhere between one and two months from now. That way, everyone who buys your first book knows a second one is coming along –thus building anticipation.
Pre-order sales are also a good indicator of how well your series is doing, i.e., "I liked the first one... now I can't wait for number two."

For digital series, especially in a faster-moving genre, the general consensus is to launch the next book quickly to capitalize on the momentum from Book 1. A typical strong cadence is 4 to 6 weeks between releases. This gives readers of the first book just enough time to finish and want the next one immediately, preventing them from forgetting your world or moving on to another series. Since you have Book 2 ready to go, I wouldn't wait much longer than a month
To solve the "spoiler" problem and build critical anticipation, you should absolutely create a simple landing page or form right now, placing the link prominently in the back of Book 1 and sharing it across social media platforms. The primary goal is to gather email addresses from readers who loved Book 1, ensuring they can be notified the instant Book 2 is available. You could hook these dedicated fans by calling it the "Where Desire Hides: Book 2 Priority List," which allows you to capture your most valuable readers and offer them exclusive content like a free short story or a small, non-spoiler preview to keep them engaged while they wait.
