The Debate Club discussion

Debate Club member Moonjelly privately applied for the role of "fact-checker" for the club, in which they'd check all claims and sources to make sure false claims and misinformation weren't spreading, then request or help you find a more credible source. After reviewing the application, moderators agreed, but first we need to see what you - the community - thinks! In this section, Moonjelly will introduce themself and members can ask questions and get to know them. After a week or two, we'll send out a poll asking you guys if you think they'd fit the official role!

Hello! I'm Moonjelly! I also go by names such as Moon, rune, and metaphor!
I enjoy reading but I also love writing!
My most enjoyed books are heartstopper, warriors, Primer, drama, smile, wings of fire, etc.
In a political sense while in my personal life I lean towards left I don't have many strict opinions and handle my feelings with respect rather than emotion, as well as I think of ideas critically rather than with sympathy. And when I research I use information and educate myself on not only both sides but also to read through and figure out if its factual or false without just the google AI overview, not taking my own opinions into account.
And I don't have a religion, more as in I don't worship a God, I just respect the earth and wildlife.

On most websites would you say skimming the website gives adequate determination of bias and accuracy?
You say you lean left- what are your main strongest political opinions? Whether they be about abortion, climate change, trump etc,.
Do you enjoy researching, genuinely?
If someone has an inaccurate or biased source, how would you bring it up to them?

I personally think that you should read it once, get your own opinion, then reread it and see if it changes. Or read it once, do more research as in finding two different websites, reading those and then coming back to the first website and reading it again, and see if all of them match up and what things do not match up.

While I am left leaning my personal opinions with abortion, I feel like it depends on not only the circumstance but the person carrying the child's morals.
I don't know to much about climate change but from my personal life and the seasons changing I do think its gotten warmer. And I don't have a true opinion on trump due to me not researching much on him, I keep forgetting to if I'm being honest. But from what I've heard and snips of what I've read I will say I don't quite agree of him morally.

I do enjoy researching, I find it exiting to possibly change my personal opinions, reading other's, and the act of doing it make me feel smart :P. Also I like it more when I come from it with an unbiased opinion, I feel as though I take in more information and actually not only learn something but figure out why I learned something.

If someone had an inaccurate or biased source, it very much so depends on what the situation was. (as in tone, why they thought of sharing it, etc.). I'd probably inform the chat with a reply and share the other sources I'd found that didn't match with the websites views, inform why it wasn't correct or biased, and depending on the source there might be add ons.

7. How would you approach someone with an inaccurate source.
8. Opinions on Ai?
9. In depth political opnions (abortions, human rights, lgtbq, etc.)

Ngl I love your answers I think you’d do a really good job, as long as you’d enjoy it and it wouldn’t be too much for you!
Edit: Not that I think you couldn’t do it, I think jobs like this can get overwhelming and I do not want that happening, if that makes sense.

1. I take many sites and compare them, finding out why or why not they match, why doesn't something match up, and also logic of how the world works.
2. I am not sure how EXACTLY I do it, but I mostly just say 'well, may not be my personal opinion, but I want to know this persons side and WHY and HOW they got this side.' plus I want to have the information on both sides, I don't want to use my own opinion since it makes me, like, learn less if that makes sense.

4. It depends on what opinion. If its something bigger, like if Slim Shady is actually a chicken nugget, then I'd do research, get other's opinions locally and online, and talk to others about how I got there.

8. I don't use AI very much, but I don't know how to feel about it. In all honesty I think it can be used for certain things, and while it is a tool, I don't think it has the best views sometimes. (As in not using credited sources.).
9. I think abortion should be legal, but if someone morally doesn't agree with it I can see why they would think that.
I think everybody should have human rights, including animals. (as in animals aren't seen as objects).
I personally am I part of LGBTQAI+, but I also will say that some members of LGBTQAI+ I don't agree with, and how they share how they feel, and how they express themselves. But I won't stop someone from doing what they think is right, unless it is literally harmful to others or themself.

If I looked up other sources and they had a different tone, and also simply rereading it and seeing if they either sugar coat things, or make normal things sound downright AWFUL.

I don't have a good example, but if they only give one side of the argument, or if they have incorrect information.

I don't normally use any tools, I mostly click on different websites such as wiki or other types of seeming to be creditable soruces to fact check, I most normally just take facts together and try to figure out what doesn't match up and what does.

over all yes, there are factors such as not being able to be on all day, nor every day, but since i have the app on my phone i can check in periodically.
