Beryl | 44 comments I started reading and I am drawn into his story. Both for the personal about his grandfather and their family and also the look into history and life during the various points in time. I’ve always yearned for more insight into my family’s experiences and since that is unavailable to me, I am grateful for those that will share their family experiences from similar place and times. Time to stop writing and get back to continuing this read…

Beautiful comments Beryl.

Beryl | 44 comments I am still enjoying this read. I am almost half way. I like getting the historical background from the political and religious perspectives and how it informs choices. At the same time continuing the personal view of authors family, dealing with the world as it was. The beginning struck close to home as my Father had Parkinson’s and witnessing his decline was the most heart wrenching experience of my life.

Beryl | 44 comments I especially like the weaving of their personal stories with history, social experiences and connections with other people and cultures.

Beryl,
I agree with you. I love this in books.

Kerry Pickens | 13 comments I enjoyed reading about the personal history and how the political viewpoints changed over time. There is a lot of information in personal narratives that will not find in history books

Kerry,
Impossible to disagree with this.
Well said!

Beryl | 44 comments I just finished this book. This read was enriching, heart wrenching, joyful, and interesting at every turn. I am grateful for Daniel’s insight into the multiple worlds of his family, history across geography, society, politics. I appreciate the extensive research he conducted to bring us into these worlds. I cried at his final words for his ghosts, my ghosts and those of us all; may all their memories be for a blessing.

Beryl-
What a beautiful review. Thank you for posting.
Whats your next book??

Beryl | 44 comments Stacey, thank you! I feel my words cannot do justice to this book. I’m still listening to ‘Two Roads Home’. Think I’ll start ‘As A Jew’ that just came available. Trying to think what to nominate for December since I just saw Jan’s post.

I must say, it is fun getting to share about our Jewish books with this group! Being able to share in our community makes the solitary reading even more fulfilling and meaningful.

Thanks for your kind words, Beryl.
Also, I look forward to hearing about As a Jew: Reclaiming Our Story from Those Who Blame, Shame, and Try to Erase Us. I've heard her talk about her book twice, and I read her first book, but for now it must wait. Please let us know how it is.
