very good point. This is the reason most of my characters start off young so that you understand why they are the way they are in their adult life.
Good way to help people understand your characters - something else you could play around with would be to have flashbacks. So the character would be an adult but having flashbacks to their earlier days. Something else to spice up people's stories.

Not confusing the hell out of the poor reader, developing a character could be something as simple as giving them a unique personality - or having them dress a certain way. All these things help the readers to picture what the character looks like, how they act and what they are going to do.
