Started this one this afternoon. I've got to say I'm enjoying the playing with language (through his not-so-great translator character) immensely. The way he speaks reminds me of some of what we do in our household (the fridge is usually referred to as "the refrigeration unit" and the bin as "the waste recepticle" etc.), although in our house it stems from my son swallowing a dictionary when he was four, and saying things like "please may I have an additional biscuit?", which always tickled me. And he LOVES making up words. even more so now he's almost 23, lol. We also tend to speak in a heap of different languages all mixed together.
The tricky part is trying to remember to speak English around other people, or they have no idea what we're on about. 😂
I'm not as enamoured of the author self-insertion. It always comes across as a touch narcissistic, I find. It was what almost put me off Paul Auster after reading The New York Trilogy. Glad I gave him another chance though, because I've really enjoyed all the other books of his I've read.
So far I'm not enjoying this quite as much as Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, but I am having fun with it!
Oh wow, that got rather emotional!I'm about 5/6th of the way through (view spoiler)
Wasn't expecting that, after how lighthearted the book had been until then!
