Kafka’s novella, “The Metamporhisis”, was not very entertaining to me. In a way, it left me cold. The plot of the story was not really enjoyable to say the least and the tone was a bit depressing. The introduction automatically starts out with the climax of the story; the metamorphosis of Gregor.the intro also describes how alienated Gregor was before the transformation, and he becomes even more isolated after the metamorphosis. Though Kafka took a different approach by writing the climax in the beginning, it didn't quite make sense to me. I wish it would have led to the climax with something more interesting. Also, Gregor never really questioned why he had transformed into a cockroach. He was just sad about not working. I don't think any of the readers wondered why either. Another reason why I couldn't relate to the story was because it didn't really go anywhere. The majority of the book took place in Gregors room. Gregors “regular human room, only a little on the small side, lay quiet between the four familiar walls.” Kafka describes Gregors room as simply plain. There were a couple of scenes where it might have briefly been in the kitchen or living room, but the story surrounded itself in Gregors room. In the end he just dies. Its a little sad. Though I can see why Kafka is considered a classic author. I really enjoyed the descriptive quality of his writing. I just couldn't get into the actual story. I would personally rate this with book as two stars.
