Jen Mays | 400 comments A dense thriller that’s also a sweeping character study told through tiny vignettes that span decades. Each short scene captures both the action and the emotion of a moment, and together they create a story that’s both intimate and epic. It’s the kind of storytelling that skips the daily grind yet kept me deeply connected to the characters as their lives unfolded over years.

At its heart, this is a story about love in all its forms — familial, friend, and romantic, and all the variations of overlap. It’s about its strength, its loss, and the long shadows it casts. It’s also about how much time slips away in the wondering, how much life we lose when we chase a single goal, and how easy it is to overlook what’s right in front of us.

Because it’s so heavy and layered, there were times the book felt unnecessarily endless; a few threads repeated when the emotional investment was already there, but that weight also contributes to the redemption landing harder. There’s power in not giving up, even when everyone else does… though Whitaker often made me wonder, at what cost?

Overall, a fantastic, emotional story.
