Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold

Lois McMaster Bujold has won the Hugo award four times, and the Nebula award twice. This is her second epic fantasy and the sequel to Curse of Chalion. The Golden General's curse has been lifted from the royal family and Cazaril can now rest easy and enjoy his new life with his bride Betriz. However, life for Ista, the Dowager Royina has not improved. With the death of her mother, the Provincara, and with her surviving child Iselle now ruling Chalion from the Capital Cardegross, she is left without purpose. Her brother's family still think she's mad and aim to keep her locked up safely to avoid embarrasment, but she craves freedom and escape and begins to plan how this may become reality.

I LOVE this book! Even though I've read it several times and have a crazy life right now, I may join you as well. The audiobook is awesome as well as it's narrated by Kate Reading.

Great ShoSho! I won't listen as my husband hates hearing my audiobooks, and I haven't set up my wireless headphones right yet. However, I'll probably hear Kate's voice as I read.

Her people are on my nerves. They decide for her and dictate what she should do and she just sits there! If I were her I would ride out in the middle of night with those 2 guards Castelar sent her! They should take order from her not the other way around!

Yeah, she refers to the events in the first book. However, since she's barely in the first book, you don't lose much understanding.

ETA: I started with this book as well. When I finally got around to reading the first, I had a few a-ha moments, but not many. The majority of the action here is as a result of the events of that book, but you also learn of relevant events that occurred beforehand. And knowing all of that doesn't help solve the mystery of this book at all.

I hadn't before either, but became a believer. She is well-loved as a narrator in the romance audiobook listener community.

Oh yeah, Kate Reading is great. She narrated the first audiobook I listened: Pride & Prejudice.

I can blame her for my obsession with both P&P and audiobooks! :)

She's also narrating a lot of the Loretta Chase books that are coming out in audio. Her narration of is great.

Fortunately there are only 5 gods/goddesses, one for each season and the Bastard. And there is the simple role that each plays based on a person's gender and age. However, I can't remember any of the more specific roles each plays.

Lara do you know which prayer I'm talking about ? The first morning dy Cabon told them the story of the Beginning and then he started to say a prayer .

“And the Bastard grant us…” —dy Cabon’s voice, fallen into the soothing singsong of ceremony, stumbled for the first time, slowing— “in our direst need, the smallest gifts; the nail of the horseshoe, the pin of the axle, the feather at the pivot point, the pebble at the mountain’s peak, the kiss in despair, the one right word. In darkness, understanding.” He blinked, looking startled.

It was as if he had not control over what he said , something possessed him to say these things.

I remember the story of The curse of Chalion well . I listened to it a couple of month ago.

when I first started reading the #1 I used it a lot , it's very helpful .

I went to a page in LMB where she explains the religion but there's a part in the book when they start the journey that explains it all.

ShoSho, I think that the prayer was automatic, and not what he planned to say. That is the fun of living in a world where gods really do intervene, but not always, and not necessarily when you expect it. I think the priest doesn't have much experience with being a god's mouthpiece.

I'll start in about 2 hours and reply as best I can. It's been years since I read these books.

It was not the usual wording. Most prayers asked to be spared the fifth god's attention...

:( I either have missed it or the narrator doesn't read the chapter number . I'm about 3:50(of 16 hours ) .

LOL! I thought it was funny but not surprising considering she's been a widow for almost 20 years.

Wow, ShoSho, you read a lot yesterday! I went out with my sister yesterday so couldn't read more after I posted. I'm still in the time around the prayer. (Chapter 2 or 3?)
