The Cold Cold Ground (2012) is fast paced, gritty, with plenty of action and some great dialogue. It reminded me a little of James Ellroy in terms of its dark, historically evocative, noir style. There is no higher praise. I can’t wait to crack on with this series.

I'm hooked on Sean Duffy and poised to start the second book...
I Hear the Sirens in the Street (2013) (Sean Duffy #2)
by
Adrian McKinty
Sean Duffy knows there's no such thing as a perfect crime. But a torso in a suitcase is pretty close.
Still, one tiny clue is all it takes, and there it is. A tattoo. So Duffy, fully fit and back at work after the severe trauma of his last case, is ready to follow the trail of blood-however faint-that always, always connects a body to its killer.
A legendarily stubborn man, Duffy becomes obsessed with this mystery as a distraction from the ruins of his love life, and to push down the seed of self-doubt that he seems to have traded for his youthful arrogance.
So from country lanes to city streets, Duffy works every angle. And wherever he goes, he smells a rat...

McKinty also wrote the Michael Forsythe trilogy.Dead I Well May Be
The Dead Yard
The Bloomsday Dead
Don't remember any humour and they were dark.
When I got as far as I could with Sean Duffy I read them along with
Falling Glass
It's setting them in The Troubles that really elevates them for me
Thanks Cphe
I'll give that other series a go, and his stand alones. Interesting that he loses the humour in the Michael Forsythe trilogy

The investigation takes place amidst the political turmoil of the time, including the aftermath of the IRA hunger strikes, the Falklands War, and whilst John DeLorean is manufacturing his sports cars in Northern Ireland, and the ever present deep sectarian divisions.
