What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Read this book on kindle about 8 years ago, it was about a boy (around 16 I think) who is taken to this island and given injections which gave him bat style wings and he was taught in a school for special children. At one point he makes a friend who is very tech savvy and learns to manipulate the suits they wear into a drill which they use to dig out their homes as part of one of their classes. The book starts with the boy at his mothers home and he goes to climb à tree and there’s crows everywhere surrounding him and he climbs the tree and falls and that’s when he’s taken to the island. The author was a man I believe and the cover had a boy with wings. I think the name was something along the lines of Apprentice Island but I don’t know for sure.
