I walk the length of my store, It’s quite large. Space, lots of clothes on hangers, All in different forms, shapes and sizes for all. I didn’t really think I would get this far in my career as a fashion designer. Then again, my father always said I could do anything. Speaking of my father, I pull out my phone with it’s pretty red sparkling case and open my messages.
I had one new message, I bit my lower lip, It was a force of habit for me now when I’m nervous. I check around the store to see a few ladies shopping looking at dresses and my co-workers nearby, I called to the nearest co-worker, Her name was Jenna. “Hey Jenna, if anyone needs me. Tell them, I’ll be a minute okay?” She smiles at me, It was such a happy and cheerful one.
“Yes boss!” I smiled at her, “I told you to call me Isabella or Isa or-” She cut me off, “Yeah, yeah. Bella also. I know the drill Isa.” I laughed, I always liked her humor.
With that out of the way, I made my way to the back storage closet of the store and pulled my phone back out. I winced when I took a better look, I didn’t just have one new message, I had over twenty missed calls from my father. I sighed and clicked his contact then the call button and waited as it rang. When it picked up I heard my dad’s voice, “Why did you not return my calls Isabella?” He asked, His tone sounded cold. Irritated.
I fight the huff I was going to let out, “I’m sorry father, I was busy. It was a busy day today. Is there any reason you called me?” I asked and heard his silent curse under his breath, “This is something that will not be spoken about over call. I need you to come to Brooklyn.” I stare at the wall, “Da-” I almost say but I know better, “Father. I’m in New York Manhattan in the middle of April, It’s a busy week for me. I can’t just drop everything just to-”
“You can, and you will. I will not ask again, I shouldn’t have to ask. You should do as you are told. Come to Brooklyn.” I clench my hand into a fist and stare at the ground, “Yes father, I’m sorry father. I’ll tell my workers they would have to do everything.” I felt the smile in his voice when he spoke, “Very well. I’ll see you soon.” Then he hung up, It’s the same as usual never says, I love you Isabella. Nope, I mean why would he?
That’s the thing about my father, He didn’t use to be this cold and distant, I didn’t have to call him father either, I in fact never understood why he one day said, “You guys are to call me father now. I don’t want to be called dad anymore.” My sisters and I, never fully understood the reason behind it, Of course it didn’t matter. He had my oldest sister Gabriella, get married to a guy that she didn’t even know about.
The guy our father married her to, Was a wealthy prince named Jack. Apparently our father’s clashed at a social event and their friendship went far enough to suggest marrying their oldest son and daughter to each other, I still remember that day perfectly. The way Gabby glared boiling holes into Jack’s head.
I wouldn’t say he was a saint about it either, He poured a whole salt shaker into her water and she spit it out. After that very nightmarish dinner, They took a moonlit walk and hit it off.
My second oldest sister, Jewel. She is still unmarried, She says she wants someone for her. I worried father would disown her if she were to deny him of the guy he chose for her but seems he got the message, I don’t really think Jewel wants a marriage yet even being twenty and only five years younger than Gabriella since Gabby is twenty-five.
Then you have me. The youngest in the Morelli family. I stand at a good eighteen. and a good five-foot-six, which isn’t something to be proud about, So I’ve heard before.
