My take on the book is that there was an overpowering theme of love between family members. Although there were instances of difficult relationships and affairs and jealously, love seemed to be the emotion that surfaced through all the complexity of the Kashpaw, Nanapush, and Pillager families. Even the arch rivals Lulu and Marie, who were part of the most intense love triangle, formed a very caring bond after Nector's death. Resilience, love, and the strong connection of blood ties is predominant through most all of the narratives.
