I’m always looking for character-driven YA stories, especially ones where the main character is questioning the world around them. If you have any recommendations, I’d love to check them out!
Maybe not quite as recent as you’re looking for (published in 2023), but I still think about Joy McCullough’s Enter the Body fairly regularly two years later—the ill-fated heroines of Shakespeare’s plays all get together and rewrite their endings.
Bluebird by Sharon Cameron is riveting historical WWII fiction based on shocking true events. YA fiction, this novel draws you in and keeps you enthralled as you follow Eva & Brigit as they leave war torn Germany and sail for a new life in America. As we learn more about their history during the war and who they really are, some of the most notorious villains of the war are also revealed. Will justice be served or will the evil beings be allowed to perpetuate their racism and bigotry in America?
Under the Same Stars by Libba Bray is FANTASTIC! Set in three time periods: WWII, 1980s, and 2020 and explores themes of resistance, fear, relationships, bullying, and fairytales. This is a very relevant story to today and helps us to understand how we have to make sure that history doesn’t repeat itself. Published 2025.
The Enigma Girls by Candace Fleming is fast-paced non-fiction that read like fiction and brought history to life! Ten female teenagers who broke ciphers during WWII helped to win the war and had to keep it a secret during the war and for decades afterward. Great true story about smart women! Loved the explanations and chances to break codes and ciphers. Published 2024.

What’s a YA book that surprised you lately, either emotionally or in the way it explored its themes?
