Duration: January 1 - December 31, 2026
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

In this challenge, you’ll be searching for words within the text of the books you read throughout the year. You can choose from three themed groups: Turning Points (a nod to our yearly theme third-place runner-up), Holidays, and Monthly Themes.

You are not limited to one word per book, but a maximum of three words per book may count toward your total list. You must find the exact word (singular or plural forms are both acceptable).

Amanda Edgar (amandaedgar) | 123 comments 📚 An Anti–Brain Rot Reading Challenge
This is your Personal Curriculum.

A commitment to diverse reading goals—not just a number on Goodreads.

🧠 Feed your mind, not just your eyes.
🔍 Read to understand, not just to finish.

This challenge is not about hitting a number but about reading with intention.

📌 Reading Rules & Goals

There is no fixed target number of books. The goal is to follow as many rules as possible, not to chase quantity.
At least 20% of your reading list must be non-fiction 📖✨
No more than 20% of your reading list may be thriller, mystery, or suspense as the main plot 🕵️‍♀️🔪
Continue at least one book series that you are currently reading 📚➡️📚
At least 10% of the books should be translated works 🌎📖
Read one academic book either related or unrelated to your degree or profession 🎓
Romance should make up 20% or less of your total reading (if read at all) 💕❌
Read more female-led stories that are not primarily romance novels 👩‍🦰📚
At least 40% of the books should be by non-American authors 🌍✍️
At least 30% of the novels should be non-Eurocentric and non-American in setting 🏞️📖
Write a review for every book read 📝✨
Try to find one English-language classic that you genuinely love 📜❤️
Read one science fiction book 🚀👽
Read more books by a specific author 🖊️
Read more books set in a specific country you are interested in 📚
Read more books written in or set during a specific time period you are interested in ⏳
Reread at least one book 🔄
Try a new author
Read at least one book longer than 500 pages 📚💪
Read at least one classic originally written in a language other than English 🌏📖
Read at least one graphic novel or illustrated book 🎨📘
Read at least one book focused on a current global issue 🌐⚡
Read at least one book outside your comfort zone 🧗‍♂️📚
Try one book that challenges your worldview 🤯📖

📖 Clarifications (Part of the Challenge)

🌎 Translations refer to books originally written in another language and read in English translation.
🎓 Academic book can include:
scholarly nonfiction, or serious theoretical, historical, philosophical, or scientific works, or
textbooks or academic-style works written for learning rather than entertainment.
🔄 Re-reads count toward this challenge and are encouraged if they deepen understanding.
✍️ Reviews can be short or long, but should reflect engaged, thoughtful reading rather than summaries.

Let's have a great year! 😁
Lets see who can follow as many rules as possible

Amanda Edgar (amandaedgar) | 123 comments Jan 2026 Six-Author TBR Buster

Here's how this will work. On or about the 19th of every month, the following month's challenge will be posted. We're all used to being here on that day anyway because of the other monthly specials. If you wish to participate that month, you will choose six authors (any six, no matter what they write) and list them in your post, numbered one through six. On or about the 25th, I'll roll one die and post the number that appears. Whatever author occupies that slot in your list is who you read the following month. Read as many books by that author as you like, but we'll all try for one. And hey -- this is for fun, so if we don't get it done, we can try again the following month!

As with the other monthly specials, you can decide month by month if you wish to participate. No long-term commitment needed! We'll see how much interest there is in this idea over the next few months, and keep it or discontinue it based on that.

1. Stephen King,
2. Agatha Christie
3. Nora Roberts
4. Kristin Hannah
5. James Patterson (Alex Cross series)
6. Karin Slaughter
