Part One Discussion
I'm just going to leave the link to the poll here!https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/1...
As for my opinion on Part One, I think it's kind of slow so far, which I don't really mind. I absolutely adore the writing style and the descriptions. The descriptions are PERFECT.
I honestly can't wait to see how this pans out. Especially when the book picks up the pace a bit. :P
The book frequently changes narrative perspectives, what do you guys think of that? The narrative also follows a non-linear sequence—shifting at times from present to past, what do you think of that?
I actually kind of like the narrative changing from person to person. It makes me get a more well rounded feel of all the characters as well as what they're sensing and feeling. It definitely adds to the story. As for the shifting times, it's kind of confusing at times and I find myself looking back and rereading to make sure I'm following it correctly. I think that also fits quite nicely with the way the book is written though.
I also thought part one was a bit slow paced, but it does pick up slowly but surely. The narrative change doesn't bother me, like Alisha said it gives me a good feel of all the characters! The shifting time really has thrown me off a bit though, I do find myself checking back on the dates and stuff.
Who is your guys' favorite character(s) so far, and why?
I like Chandresh. I don't exactly know what it is about him that I like so much, lol. I guess he sort of reminds me of my best friend at times. Plus, I'd love to go to one of the midnight feasts because it sounds amazing. :3
i dont think part one was slow really. i think it moved at the best pace for setting the scene without being confusing.i love the descriptions and my favourite part was definitely the clock.
its a really good start for the book, it introduces you to the main plot of the two young magicians whilst also inviting you to see the making of the circus.
i like that it goes backwards and forwards in time but i do have to check back with the dates to work it out
It started out a bit slow for me, but the way it's told just seems so much like a fairytale to me. The way it's written is beautiful and I agree that the descriptions of everything are absolutely perfect. I really want this to be a movie but then I remember Hollywood always screws up the movie adaptation of books.
I bet time and the clock and that whole idea have a bigger part in the rest of the book, but that's just a guess!
How did everyone feel in the scene where Celia's father was cutting her hands open?Personally, I think that it does a really good job of showing a) how important the contest that she will have with Marco is and b)the kind of father he is to her. If he does this, who knows what else he has done.
I mean, it kind of was necessary to teach her to control her powers and teach her discipline. I understand. Especially with such a high stakes game at hand.
I know it's still a bit much to do to her, but he knew she could fix it at least. Especially since he tried getting her to control herself and she was having problems doing that. I don't think he really cared about her much anyways. He just wants to win the competition and wanted bragging rights to Chandresh.
I feel like Celia's father was over the top sometimes but he really did love her. I mean he had no choice, her mother left her on his doorstep with a note saying she was going to commit suicide. The whole finger cutting open thing was not out of cruelty, he was teaching her how to heal herself. He was teaching her something very important and helping her control her magic.
she does say that she is in a lot of pain and only has a few seconds pain free before he cuts her again. i understand that he was trying to get her to control her anger but he could have found a pain free way. i dont think he loved her as a father should. i think he just knew it was his duty to care for her. right from the start he was using her as a sort of mascot.
i do believe he did grow to love her, and through the pain he was trying to help her. yes, he could've done it in a different way. I do believe he just used her as a pawn for his game

In many books it is confusing when the author shifts from one perspective to another and ESPECIALLY from one time to another. But Erin did a GREAT work with it.Actually the book is so freaking dreamy...I don't want to leave<3<3

Believe me,you don't know how much of a price they have to pay because of the game...Especially in the 3rd and 4th part:(((

what do you guys think of Bailey? I know he's not one of the main charachters but i find him very interesting especially after he enters the circus during the daytime. (plus i'm sure there's gonna be more of him in the book since the way the first part ends)
I think the person he met at the night circus during the day was Poppet. It makes sense because of the bright red hair and white dress! I really hope it was. I actually like Bailey. I don't like his sister or much of his family though.
I like Bailey, I really want to see where his story line is going. When he was first introduced I was pretty con
Sorry I'm at work and I wasn't paying attention and I must have hit post. But as I was saying I was pretty confused when Bailey was first introduced, even with him venturing in the circus. So im really interested in seeing where it's going

I finished the book.Go and see my review,it doesn't contain spoilers...I made it kind of eerie/dreamy.Like how Bailey would think...

Mary, I'll definitely check out your review! Today is the last day to read part two, I believe, so if someone wants to start a discussion post for part two this evening they can!

Yeah,I know:D
Yeah,I know:D
im about to start part 2 so will be joining the discussion in a few days. are you keeping the discussions to match the reading schedule? that would be a great help for me so i have time to keep up
Annabelle, its hard to put down and the chapters are quite short so im sure you will be up to date by part 3! comment what you think of part one when youre done (:
Is anyone else still confused at this point? I finished part one yesterday and I'm not sure I completely know what's going on, although it's beginning to come together for me. At the beginning I was getting characters mixed up too so that doesn't help, lol
Thx Raychul! I'm half way through part one now, I'm sure I'll have more time to read and catch up with everyone. Already attracted to the story now :). It's sure a can't-put-down kind of book.
katie i kept getting confused with names too! i kept mixing up chandresh and tsukiko and getting completely lost
They're the two I'm still clueless about, Raychul! I think it doesn't help that I read half of part one while I was sick, so I wasn't quite thinking straight lol
Goodness I'm way off schedule! I just finished part one. I really like Celia and Marco, I have to say I'm a little disappointed because when they first introduced Isobel I thought it was Celia giving a fake name. But I still like Isobel too and her card reading! The time changes have me confused so I look back a lot.

also, someone made their own poll and I thought that was awesome! If anybody makes one just comment in the thread for the week it pertains to :)
I hope to have some downtime and be able to read with you guys soon! So go ahead and discuss and ask questions here for part one ONLY :)
