Great question Michelle. I was so outdone by that 2nd nonsensical ending that I didn't even think about it. But It's probably Laurie because she seemed to be the most sociopathic/psychotic.

And, why would Laurie simply throw the necklace away in her wastebasket when she knew Eric would be coming over?

I think Laurie got too confident. But yes she was the one narrating the story and Max was on the phone with Sam. Sam was Mike's Svengali.

If only Max had confided to Eric that he was also talking to Sam.
