I haven't posted anything for a long time, but here I am again. I usually just buy books and I haven't gotten much from the library since my kids were young. Well, I went to the library Saturday and picked up a couple of books and found out from the librarian that I could borrow Audio Books. I went on the website when I got hone and downloaded "The Red Garden". At first I didn't think I would like listening, but I picked up some of my needlework and became engrossed in the book as well as my needlework. Hours went by, usually I have to stop reading my paper books because my eyes are bad, but my ears still work. I just downloaded another Audio book and I am also going to read a paper book, too. I am so glad I was introduced to this form of reading. It's like being told a story,

I'm able to get through so many more books since I figured out I could listen most of the time while I'm at work (or while cleaning, crocheting, etc) I check out books from my library, and also use Audible and Librivox. Happy listening!
I dont think I'll be into audio books but was curious to try one since there's a free promotion with audible through amazon if you've never gotten one before. Have no idea what to get though

Or, look at the library online and go to audio books. They are all free, just as long as you have a library card. There are a whole bunch of them. I have been listening to mine while doing housework, stitching and waiting on the bus. Comes in great when you can't sit down and read a book.
I think I've had a rough start with audiobooks. I got out Fahrenheit 451 from the library, audiobook form, and it's really not that long but over a month later I've yet to finish it. I think I prefer physically reading for downtime because I don't really listen to music so I can't substitute that time (ie on the train or something) to listening to the book so I end up making time and it's just eh. Not enjoying the experience at all.
I'm constantly listening to audiobooks at work -- if I can't find what I want from the library, sometimes Youtube even has them.Kirstie, I've noticed that I'm exceptionally picky when it comes to narrators -- I especially enjoyed Wil Wheaton's reading of Ready Player One, and Neil Gaiman reading any of his own books is fantastic too. I couldn't stand the narration for Angelfall or Divergent, which seem to be two books everyone loved but me.
I'm hoping that's the case and it's just the narrator because this would certainly be cool to get into. I'll more than likely give another a go in the future but for now I'll probably stick with reading for a while. And I should probably work out a better system for listening than just on my stereo, not exactly portable haha
Narrators make a difference. Also, I suggest you make sure you are listening to an unabridged version of the book. I once listened to an abridged version of A Time to Kill after having read it and a whole lot of good parts were cut out of the recording.
I've completely given up listening to music in my car for audio books. Which is great until you have a passenger. Narrators are so very important. There is one series I really wanted to like however the narrator completely killed it for me. The way she pronounced some words was really distracting and completely took me out of the story.
I´m listening to the The Privilege of the Sword and I´m really enjoying it. I find it hard to concentrate on audio books, to be completely honest, even harder to make myself listen to the one. Narrators bugs me, there´re so few of them I find listenable. If I´m listening to the audio book, it´s usually in the bed, before sleeping (they are like a lullaby) or when I´m gardening.
