Monica | 909 comments I was saddened to learn John Shearman passed away in '03. His book on Mannerism changed my life. Are there any other John Shearman fans out there?

Monica,I read 2 of his books in college.. haven't thought about him in years! Yes, his book on mannerism is wonderful. Also his books on Raphael were excellent. Raphael's cartoons was a great read. Wonderful writer and contributor to the art history world. He will be missed. Think I will reread... Thanks for posting.

Monica | 909 comments Yes, I loved Sydney Freedberg's book, too. I wrote to John Shearman in the mid-late nineties and asked if he did any tours in Italy, I'd love to attend. He sent a nice note back. It's somewhere in the "archives".

I was at the Met last week for my sister's 50th/aunt's 80th birthday celebration held in the 4th floor atrium room behind the stairs to the roof. It was a magnificent day and those who could manage went up for the panorama and stunning installation. Check it out if you haven't already.

There was only time to run through Augustus Saint Gauden's exhibit, didn't have time to even read a placard.

New York is so fantastic.

Jonathan Lopez | 257 comments I took his Renaissance art course in college. Another book of his that we have is Only Connect... Art and the Spectator in the Italian Renaissance. Sadly, I just looked at the book's Goodreads page and I see that it has precisely one reader. I'll have to add it to my shelf. At least that way it will be two.

Monica | 909 comments You took a course with Shearman? What was it like????

Jonathan Lopez | 257 comments He was just as you might imagine. Erudite, sophisticated...

Monica | 909 comments OMG you're lucky. I hope Shearman was nice.

I was VERY put off by Ernst Gombrich when he came to the Met. He was ARROGANT and CONDESCENDING to a young woman in the audience. Put me off him totally.

Jonathan Lopez | 257 comments That's a shame about Gombrich. I admire his work. Maybe it's a good thing that I never saw him in person.

Lobstergirl I've owned his book on Mannerism for awhile. One of these days I'll get around to reading it.

Monica | 909 comments Hi! I'm not around here much but I adored Shearman's book on Mannerism. It changed my life and provided so much to search out on my travels. I think it might be a great time to re-read it.
