Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Competitive Marauding Monsters
>
Grim Slayers
About this Challenge◈ Starts on Jan 16, 2026 and runs for SIX weeks (ending Feb 27)
◈ The start / end time for each round will be 9pm UK time
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the game wins!
◈ Each team will be made up of five players, and each player will get 5 books every two weeks.
◈ You will create your own team and should be of people who can commit to five books over a 2-week period. Other than the 10 shared across the team. People will not be allowed extra books if someone is under-reading. If real life happens, and someone needs to switch out, you need to find your own alternate. There will be a thread for finding teams.
◈ Each team will get an extra 10 books for the two-week period to share between members. One member cannot read all 10 books by themselves.
◈ Teams may make a private group to discuss monsters and planning. A moderator will have access to the spreadsheet to verify that books are being entered correctly, and no one is over-reading.
◈ Each team can have up to five monsters active (on the spreadsheet) at once
◈ Each monster has a set of required tasks that must be completed in order to vanquish the monster. Books can be used to complete more than one task, but only for the same monster. If you can find a single book that meets all five tasks, congratulations, you defeated the monster with just one book.
◈ Monsters are assigned at random and may be repeated by the same team/individual. However, you can request a re-spin if you already have the monster on your spreadsheet or this would be the third time that you would have this monster during the entire 6-week period.
◈ Usual rules hold on location (must be over 50% of the book) and color cover (must be over 50% of the cover).
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count
◈ Books must be at least 100 pages in length
I honestly don't have too much of a clue what this challenge is about but it looks fun. I am glad we were able to all team up. Do any of you have team name ideas? Do we need a secret group?
I'm with you Rachel, I think this looks like a hoot from what I gathered on the monster wheel page.I have no idea what to do for a name, but I will think on it.
I am glad that I am not the only one who’s not sure what the challenge entails. It sounded like fun and I am ready to slay some monsters!…lol
Do we have a wheel we will want to start with? I wonder if we are able to do a monsters from different wheels at the same time. I might ask in the Q and A unless I find the answer.Completion points per monster by Wheel:
◈ Greek, Asian, Urban Legends and Fictional Humans – 20 points per monster
◈ Dr. Who, Vegi-might, Discworld and Holiday – 30 points per monster
◈ Bad Romance, Overly Specific and World Villains -40 points per monster
It would make sense if the 40-point monsters are more involved. We might want to possibly knock them out ASAP. I don't have a personal preference if someone else would like to pick a staring place.
Some possible team names:Monster Mashers
Beast Busters
Creature Killers
Nightmare Slayers
Grim Slayers
Also more than happy if someone else has ideas. I just got these from google.
Also my question was answered: Yes, 5 from any combo you’d like. All from one wheel or one from 5 different ones. Or some combo in between.
Now that I am looking at the rules a bit closer and see we need to do some strategic planning, maybe we should have a secret group. Rachel suggested it off the bat. Anyone else have a thought?I think I like Grim Slayers the best, but I am partial to Nightmare Slayers and Creature Killers as well.
I like Grim Slayers and Nightmare Slayers a close second! Agree, that we need to plan especially if we would like to do a buddy read.
Question: When it comes to the 12 book recommendations… are they generated from our TBR pile or books we read already and enjoyed?
I ask because the we cannot read the books fom our list only our teammates.
Teammates,Disregard the question on the recommendation list.
I am participating in another challenge as well.
We have 8 days until the challenge starts. Do we want to plan early or wing it? Do we want to have a secret group or plan in this thread?
How soon can we spin the wheel(s)? I prefer planning, especially since I have so many book challenges I'm doing.
I don't see any reason we can't put in a spin request once we decide what we want to do. I don't know how fast we will get the tasks and we haven't gotten a spreadsheet yet.Because we can have a combo of monsters going from different wheels maybe we should each choose a wheel (listed in message 1) to get a monster from for the start. We can work on all the monsters as a group but I was thinking it would be a fun way to decide which 5 to start with. They can be the same wheel or all different or a combo.
Here's your team spreadsheet:

You'll need to request access. Only the NBRC Mod account will have access to view your spreadsheet outside of the members of your team.
Happy Hunting!

It would be great if we could put in our spin requests today so we will get a heads up on what books to work on. If everyone wants to post a wheel that looks best I will ask for our spin requests.
If we are going for the most points, I vote for World Villains. If it is just your favorite wheel, I am good with any lol
I am new to this challenge but it appears some teams have spun their wheel. Are we able to start spinning or we are waiting until Jan 16?
Jacqueline wrote: "I am new to this challenge but it appears some teams have spun their wheel. Once everyone makes their choice I will put in the request.
I'll take World Villain then for my spin. Gives me time to find a book that fits as many. Going to be trying to read more books from other countries this year :)
World villain was one I was thinking of as well. I am also thinking about bad romance and vegi-might.
Personally, I would select a wheel worth the most points - Bad Romance, Overly Specific and World Villains. However, the Overly Specific Wheel seems scary!
I am actually kind of excited to see what our first tasks will be.So far we will spin for Urban Legends and World Villains. I plan to do either Bad Romance or another World Villain depending on what Upton and Jacqueline choose.
Elizabeth spun for us:bad romance: Heathcliffe and Catherine
John Willoughby and Marianne Dashwood
World Villians: Gilles de Rais
John Lynch
Urban Legends: Jackalopes
I will post to spreadsheet later unless someone beats me to it.
For some reason the drop-down box for "Read By" only has numbers and Jacqueline's name. I'm guessing that is an error and I am adding all of our names. Sorry Mod if that is inaccurate!
I believe it is sorted.
Some groups seem to have their tasks already. I don't see where the tasks are listed. I asked in the Q & A where to find that info. Do any of you happen to know?
Angie helped me out (as always!).Here is the link to the Monster Tasks SS
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
I think the SS is squared away...I think lol
Thanks for adding them to the team ss! Now we can start planning books. Remember- books can be used for more than one task for the same monster.
I have been planning on reading Wuthering Heights so I can knock out that monster unless you guys want to.ETA- I put it on the ss. Feel free to change if needed.
I'm not sure what you mean. On the team ss I don't see Bad Romance only. For the wheel decide wheels the links are under the blurbs or on the master list of tasks.
Our first monster has been defeated so I asked for another Bad Romance spin for our new monster. It is now on the spreadsheet. Going forward how should we decide which wheel we want? As an update we have 2 other monsters almost ready to be completed. Feel free to add your books to the spreadsheet so we know what tasks to look for.
