Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments hum, if novellas count, why not graphic novels? I don't read that many of them myself, but if I read one, I think I'd count it.

message 2: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I have only read one graphic novel, Persepolis 1 The Story of a Childhood, but I'd certainly count that one.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments If I re-read Watchmen I'd certainly count it. I'd also recommend it to everybody.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments My one and only graphic novel is Mercy Thompson Homecoming. And I would definately count that.

I really like the Mercy Thompson books. I've been wanting to pick up the graphic novel. I is good?

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well Tessa--I liked it. It kind of fit in with the series, just answered a few questions from the series.

Persepolis Books 1 and 2 are the only graphic novels I've read either.

Andrea | 56 comments What about mangas? I read them too.

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments What are mangas? And novellas? And what is considered to be a graphic novel? Haha, really dumb questions, but i honestly don't know.

A novella is shorter than a novel but longer than a short story. Don't know really what, if any, official length they are, but they fall in there somewhere.

A graphic novel is basically a comic-book style of writing -- but at a novels length.

And I have no clue what manga is -- I've heard of it, but I'll be interested to learn about it too! (I do know they are novel size and have to do with Japanese style literature...I think....)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments Oh thanks for clearing that up for me Lynn ! :)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Manga has to do with Anime'. My local library has an entire section of Manga--you might try there to see what they are. I haven't read any, but my grandkids talk about it periodically. Usually when they want me to do them a costume based on some Manga character.

message 14: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments Ohh, right. I've seen books like that in my school library I think. :)

message 15: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa theJeepDiva (thejeepdiva) I have 2 graphic novels that I plan to read sometime soon. I loved King's Dark Tower series & there are a few graphic novels that follow the story line. I was not planning on counting them towards my 144 count. That's just me though. I already have an abundance of time on my hands & after I move to my new home in February I will have even more.

Oh boy, I don't really know what anime is either. Think when I'm at the library this afternoon, I'm going to have to do a little looking around for anime and manga and see what they are.

message 17: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Anime' is a form of Japanese inspired cartoons. They are definately NOT the cartoons you watched as a kid. Think more like feature length movie. They also tend to have very similar story lines (usually something steampunkish, martial arts-ish, or super-heroish) and we won't even TALK about the artwork. While beautiful, they ALL look like they were drawn by the same person, using the same models. If you are a fan of Diana Wynne Jones they did her Howl's Moving Castle as an anime. It doesn't really follow the book real well, but then again--when does a movie ever?

Thanks, Ann. That explains why I haven't heard of it before! I guess I have to look into some of these newer literary forms.

Great explainataion and for those of you still wondering what Manga's are, they are essentially the book form of anime. And many Manga have Anime that are based on them and vice versa.

message 21: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Karen, audio books count!

message 22: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenvwrites) | 122 comments ok good. I have a george carlin on tape I would love to include.

message 23: by Kelly (new)

Kelly He wrote books? I'll have to look for those, he was hilarious!

message 24: by ~Sara~ (new)

~Sara~ | 171 comments I love Carlin's take on blue food. His books are great!

I've read several graphic novels that are far more complex than many novels so I'm definately counting them. I'm actually currently reading The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 4 which must weigh at least 10 pounds!

I'll probably reread V for Vendetta soon as well. I watched the movie again the other night which always makes me want to reread the books. The books are almost always so much better, although my character always sounds like Hugo Weaving in my head now which is not a bad thing. He did an awesome job in the movie!

Pat | 162 comments A very interesting thread. When I first saw graphic novels - I thought they were ones with too much sex duh! And I wondered who decided.

And manga sounds like the Italian word for eat. Some days I feel as if I don't know much at all. Thanks for the lesson this morning

LOL Pat! :D

message 27: by Trez (new)

Trez (trezy) i love manga's i've read so many of them since the beginning of the year... hence why i was looking to see if i could add them to my list... if i've counted correctly i've read in about 6 full series and some range between 10 - 30 books... so this is awesome ^-^

message 28: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 56 comments Trez, what kind of manga do you like? I do enjoy reading mangas. GO to www.beta.onemanga.com It has many different mangas. Right now, I'm in love with this manga, Kimi ni Todoke. The main female character is sooo cute!!! I love the main male character. It makes me go awww over them. Hehe. :)

Well, there are some graphic novels which are quite explicit... ;)

message 30: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 56 comments Sakura, Sailor Moon is first anime that I watched. Then started to look for animes on youtube, then learned about mangas. Now I'm hooked on mangas. I like to go to www.beta.onemanga.com because it's updated fast compared to manga books, they get forever to come out. For me, I like mangas better than animes.

message 31: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments I'm hooked on Weiss Kreuz; a Japanese anime with a German name. You can view the episodes on YouTube. I watched them all, LOL, in 3 days! I even asked for the DVD for my birthday. And what's worse? I'll be 33 this coming Saturday, I'm happily married going on 10 years, and I've got the hots for one of the characers. LOL, is that sad or what? But Aya (Ran)... *sigh*

message 32: by Amber (new)

Amber Personally, I'm not counting volumes of manga as books. It takes me a little less than an hour to read the average manga volume. It takes me about 3 to 4 hours to read most novels. I even added this as a disclaimer to my list for the year.

message 33: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments That's true, Amber, and depending on the book, I can have it read in that many hours as well. But for some, it could take hours to read a manga, for their speed isn't like ours. I'd still say yes.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I consider them books, so yep

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

The word "novel" is in the genre so yeah. I'm reading The Sandman books right now and I'm definiteky counting them.
