Stormhawk's COMPLETED 100 in 2010 and still reading...
January 2009I received several children's books as gifts this year, and they are starting me off!
1 If You Give a Moose a Muffin - Laura Joffe Numeroff
2 Nobody Wants a Nuclear War Story and Pictures - Judith Vigna
3 Sootface - Robert SanSouci
4 A Boy Called Slow - Joseph Bruchas
(don't worry, I'm making up for the lack of page count here by reading The System of the World, part 3 of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.)
9 The Power of Female Friendship: How Your Circle of Friends Shapes Your Life - Paul Dobransky, M.D.
How did you like Thunderstruck, in the end? I know you were hoping to enjoy it as much as the other one you read by that author.
Stephanie wrote: "How did you like Thunderstruck, in the end? Also, I didn't come away with much in the way of understanding the hows and whys radio works ... I thought that would have been explained further. There were fewer details of Crippen's life and crimes available in comparison to HH Holmes. So, I liked it, but not as much.
Noted in another thread that you prefer the publication order rather than chronological for the Narnia series. I have had the set since I was a kid, and didn't know there was another way to order them (although I knew that Magician's Nephew was written after The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). So I looked it up, and now understand the controversy a bit better. I read these books over and over as a kid, always chronologically, except that I think I read The Lion...first because I had an old copy and didn't realize it was a series. You have inspired me to maybe re-read them in publication order one day. It has been a while. Or maybe when my kids are old enough for me to read this to them I'll try publication order.Do you plan to read all seven? Is this your first time reading them?
By the way, I'm not sure of the proper etiquette when it comes to these threads. I thought this would be the easiest place to catch you, but if you prefer I not comment in this thread I'd be happy to oblige.
I've read the Chronicles of Narnia countless times since I was a child. They're like old friends! I think they should be read in publication order mainly because the magic of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is in NOT knowing about the world and how it was created and Aslan's part in it. After that, it's pretty much just a matter of where do the rest of the stories fit ... there's a flow from the Peevensies, to Eustace, to Jill, and so on to the Last Battle. The Wikipedia page on the Chronicles of Narnia does a very good job of explaining the "controversy."
19 Prince Caspian - C.S. Lewis
26 Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed! - Katharine DeBrecht27 Help! Mom! Hollywood's in My Hamper! - Katharine DeBrecht
28 Help! Mom! The 9th Circuit Nabbed the Nativity - Katharine DeBrecht
50 The Miserable Mill - Lemony Snicket(Hard to believe it's not even halfway through the year and I'm halfway through the challenge!)
