If you can't find an appropriate folder for your books, have any other suggestions or need assistance, please let me know. I am happy to oblige.

message 2: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lee, what a great idea for a group! I don't need any assistance; I just want to say hurrah!

Thanks Chrissie, I've had a shelf called comfort reads for a while now and I just had a flash of inspiration last night. I'm glad you like it!

Sandy | 24 comments Lee, this is a lovely idea and I know just what you mean when you speak about it! Kinda like 'comfort foods' but much better for the waistline (though hot fudge sauce and haagen daz are going to stay right where they are - regularly in my fridge). But while I'm eating a spoonful or more, or when I'm just too cold for ice cream and need a 'blankie and a good book' - this is where I'll come to!

I've already got several that jump to mind. I'll note them and look forward to participating!
Thank you for inviting me!

Welcome Sandy! That's exactly what I mean. I hope you find some great comfort reads. Please feel free to start or add to a thread if you don't find what you're looking for. We're only one day old so things may not be perfectly organized yet. I'm busy trying to add people's suggestions to the bookshelves.

message 6: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 24 comments So Lee,
Is there a way to connect to this discussion group via some link on GoodReads or do I need to keep the message you sent me forever? If the latter, let me know, then I'll put the email in a separate folder so it does not get inadvertently deleted!!
Many thanks!

Sandy, there is a very easy way to access the group. When you click on Home at the top of the page, you will see a tab beside the updates tab called Groups. Just click on that and you will see your groups listed with the most recent postings. Let me know if you find it.

Found it Lee! Thanks so much!!

Perhaps those members who know how to add books to group bookshelves could add them whenever they've mentioned a book in a thread, and ask for help doing so if they don't know how to do it, or ask for you Lee, or another member, to add books for them.

Feel free to help me add books that have been mentioned Lisa or anyone else! I'm going as fast as I can, huff, huff!

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
I'm noticing a few things regarding traditional and unusual comfort reads in the threads. I have a few organizational ideas that will hopefully be implemented later tonight. If you have several recommendations from one author, please feel free to open a new thread specifically for that author under the appropriate genre/folder. Thanks!

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I have added some of the books that I mentioned. I will do that in the future, too!

Great, thanks Jeannette!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Lee, can we have a chicklit folder please? I love my chicklit for when my brain can't cope with anything else.

message 15: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Hahahahahah, Boof, I was thinking about that last night and I knew I needed to add it for you!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Yay! I love me some fluff!

message 17: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Boof, I just created a few more threads for romance as well. I'm not an expert in these genres and I often can't tell the difference between chick lit and romance. We can always add more as long as someone lets me know what's needed!

message 18: by Misfit (new)

Misfit How about a folder for big fat family sagas? No one writes them anymore but there are still lots of long-forgotten goodies out there and I love sinking myself into one on a rainy Seattle day.

message 19: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Great idea Misfit! I wonder if a thread would be appropriate in the Hist Fic folder or do you think there are enough of these to warrant a folder all their own?

message 20: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I think we can have one there. I'll start it later unless you beat me to it.

Are you thinking along the lines of Ross Poldark? That's all that comes into my head at the moment.

Peregrine | 91 comments Lee wrote: "Are you thinking along the lines of Ross Poldark? That's all that comes into my head at the moment. "

Ooohh, that was good! I watched most of the series, read all the books, and had a long-running crush on Demelza.

message 23: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I was wondering wether it might be a good idea to have a thread for comfort movies. I know that this is primarily a book discussion group, but there have been many movies mentioned, especially movies adapted from books (I know that most of my comfort movies are of that type). However, I do not want to start a thread on the above without first checking with the group.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

It would be a fun thread. We have something similar on the Jane Austen group -- in addition to discussing Austen adaptations. I guess it's up to Lee. :)

message 25: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I think it would be as well, but I think I'll wait until Lee has seen my suggestion, as she's the main monitor. I'm interested in your Jane Austen group, though (one of my all time comfort movies is the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy).

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

The group is called Jane Austen. Consider this an "official" invitation. We've just been discussing Colin vs. Matthew this week. I'm a Matthew fan!

message 27: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I've found it and signed on. Don't know when I'll be able to get to it, I've got some other GR readings to do, but I'll at least be taking a look this weekend. Thanks.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Enjoy! There are a lot of interesting threads and it always seems that someone new comes along and revives something. :)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Hi Guys, sure I'll set up a folder for Comfort Movies. I'm running out the door but I'll put the folder in place and start the thread for you...
Enjoy!

message 30: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
The Movies folder is at the bottom of the home page for now. Go for it! I'll be back later.

message 31: by Peregrine (new)

Peregrine | 91 comments I think it would be fun to have a place to open threads to discuss particular books at length. I'm thinking either individual threads in the appropriate genre section, or a separate section for book discussions. What do people think?

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that is a good idea. Anyone can start a new thread within a folder (I believe). This let's you keep going on your discussion without losing it in the jumble.

message 33: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Peregrine wrote: "I think it would be fun to have a place to open threads to discuss particular books at length. I'm thinking either individual threads in the appropriate genre section, or a separate section for boo..."

Peregrine, Sure! It's as Jeannette says. Just start a thread in the appropriate folder and put the book title (and author if you'd like) in the subject heading, post the first message, and the discussion(s) can go from there.

message 34: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) It really is too bad we can't have folders within folders. Then each book could have its own folder too. But we can't do that, yet. We could do a folder for books but they wouldn't be listed under their genres.

Peregrine, yes absolutely! You can start a new thread if you want to focus on a particular topic, author or title. I just ask that you try and find the most appropriate folder to start it under. If you're not sure just ask!

message 36: by Peregrine (new)

Peregrine | 91 comments Could we have a section for Psychology? I have some titles I could add. And Lisa, I'm interested to see your Science and Nature comfort titles.

message 37: by Lisa (last edited Jan 09, 2010 07:40PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Peregrine, Definitely psychology! Okay, I can create folder/bookshelf as needed.

One off the top of my head in the nature category is one I've already mentioned: Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat. I'll post some others when time permits.

message 38: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Great idea Peregrine! I see Lisa is right on the ball and has already added it.

message 39: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) And now a bookshelf waiting to be filled.

Peregrine, I'll post some books eventually, but in "soft" science I like just about anything by Oliver W. Sacks and Lewis Thomas, but many more too.

Oh, I just thought of a great couple of books for self-help too! Yay!

message 42: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Is there a book giveaway topic? I must head off to work and don't have time to hunt. Just spotted one for The Stolen Crown by GR's own Susan H. at The Burton Review,

http://www.theburtonreview.com/2010/0...

message 43: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Misfit, Do you mean in this group? No, but we could start a thread if it's wanted.

Goodreads does have a swap program: http://www.goodreads.com/swap

and, of course, individual Goodreads members loan/give books to other members all the time.

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Lisa wrote: "Misfit, Do you mean in this group? No, but we could start a thread if it's wanted."

Since we are all on many diverse GR groups, it might be nice to have a folder where we could post giveaway links like Misfit just did. I am always hoping I'll win a book!

message 45: by Misfit (new)

Misfit There is at least one Give aways group here on GR but I'm not sure how many follow it.

message 46: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, Feel free to start a thread. Start it in the just to chat folder, I think. Lee, you can always move it to the general folder or wherever you'd like it.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Lee took care of it. I hope I find a giveaway that interests me & that I finally win something! :)

Lisa, the swap program is not avalaible for all countries, at least not yet. Sometimes we send books to each other as passport books...

message 50: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Laura, You are so right!! AND, it's the reason I'm not participating yet. I'm waiting for it to go international, and that is something I've asked for!
