Thanks Chrissie, I've had a shelf called comfort reads for a while now and I just had a flash of inspiration last night. I'm glad you like it!
Lee, this is a lovely idea and I know just what you mean when you speak about it! Kinda like 'comfort foods' but much better for the waistline (though hot fudge sauce and haagen daz are going to stay right where they are - regularly in my fridge). But while I'm eating a spoonful or more, or when I'm just too cold for ice cream and need a 'blankie and a good book' - this is where I'll come to!I've already got several that jump to mind. I'll note them and look forward to participating!
Thank you for inviting me!
Welcome Sandy! That's exactly what I mean. I hope you find some great comfort reads. Please feel free to start or add to a thread if you don't find what you're looking for. We're only one day old so things may not be perfectly organized yet. I'm busy trying to add people's suggestions to the bookshelves.
So Lee, Is there a way to connect to this discussion group via some link on GoodReads or do I need to keep the message you sent me forever? If the latter, let me know, then I'll put the email in a separate folder so it does not get inadvertently deleted!!
Many thanks!
Sandy, there is a very easy way to access the group. When you click on Home at the top of the page, you will see a tab beside the updates tab called Groups. Just click on that and you will see your groups listed with the most recent postings. Let me know if you find it.

Lee wrote: "I'm busy trying to add people's suggestions to the bookshelves."Perhaps those members who know how to add books to group bookshelves could add them whenever they've mentioned a book in a thread, and ask for help doing so if they don't know how to do it, or ask for you Lee, or another member, to add books for them.
Feel free to help me add books that have been mentioned Lisa or anyone else! I'm going as fast as I can, huff, huff!
I'm noticing a few things regarding traditional and unusual comfort reads in the threads. I have a few organizational ideas that will hopefully be implemented later tonight. If you have several recommendations from one author, please feel free to open a new thread specifically for that author under the appropriate genre/folder. Thanks!
I have added some of the books that I mentioned. I will do that in the future, too!
Lee, can we have a chicklit folder please? I love my chicklit for when my brain can't cope with anything else.
Boof, I just created a few more threads for romance as well. I'm not an expert in these genres and I often can't tell the difference between chick lit and romance. We can always add more as long as someone lets me know what's needed!
How about a folder for big fat family sagas? No one writes them anymore but there are still lots of long-forgotten goodies out there and I love sinking myself into one on a rainy Seattle day.
Great idea Misfit! I wonder if a thread would be appropriate in the Hist Fic folder or do you think there are enough of these to warrant a folder all their own?
Are you thinking along the lines of Ross Poldark? That's all that comes into my head at the moment.
Lee wrote: "Are you thinking along the lines of Ross Poldark? That's all that comes into my head at the moment. "Ooohh, that was good! I watched most of the series, read all the books, and had a long-running crush on Demelza.
I was wondering wether it might be a good idea to have a thread for comfort movies. I know that this is primarily a book discussion group, but there have been many movies mentioned, especially movies adapted from books (I know that most of my comfort movies are of that type). However, I do not want to start a thread on the above without first checking with the group.
It would be a fun thread. We have something similar on the Jane Austen group -- in addition to discussing Austen adaptations. I guess it's up to Lee. :)
I think it would be as well, but I think I'll wait until Lee has seen my suggestion, as she's the main monitor. I'm interested in your Jane Austen group, though (one of my all time comfort movies is the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy).
The group is called Jane Austen. Consider this an "official" invitation. We've just been discussing Colin vs. Matthew this week. I'm a Matthew fan!
I've found it and signed on. Don't know when I'll be able to get to it, I've got some other GR readings to do, but I'll at least be taking a look this weekend. Thanks.
Enjoy! There are a lot of interesting threads and it always seems that someone new comes along and revives something. :)
Hi Guys, sure I'll set up a folder for Comfort Movies. I'm running out the door but I'll put the folder in place and start the thread for you...
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
I think it would be fun to have a place to open threads to discuss particular books at length. I'm thinking either individual threads in the appropriate genre section, or a separate section for book discussions. What do people think?
I think that is a good idea. Anyone can start a new thread within a folder (I believe). This let's you keep going on your discussion without losing it in the jumble.
Peregrine wrote: "I think it would be fun to have a place to open threads to discuss particular books at length. Just start a thread in the appropriate folder and put the book title (and author if you'd like) in the subject heading, post the first message, and the discussion(s) can go from there.
It really is too bad we can't have folders within folders. Then each book could have its own folder too. But we can't do that, yet. We could do a folder for books but they wouldn't be listed under their genres.

Peregrine, yes absolutely! You can start a new thread if you want to focus on a particular topic, author or title. I just ask that you try and find the most appropriate folder to start it under. If you're not sure just ask!

Could we have a section for Psychology? I have some titles I could add. And Lisa, I'm interested to see your Science and Nature comfort titles.
Peregrine, Definitely psychology! Okay, I can create folder/bookshelf as needed. One off the top of my head in the nature category is one I've already mentioned: Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat. I'll post some others when time permits.
Peregrine wrote: "Could we have a section for Psychology? I have some titles I could add. Sacks and Lewis Thomas, but many more too.
Is there a book giveaway topic? I must head off to work and don't have time to hunt. Just spotted one for The Stolen Crown by GR's own Susan H. at The Burton Review,http://www.theburtonreview.com/2010/0...
Misfit, Do you mean in this group? No, but we could start a thread if it's wanted.Goodreads does have a swap program: http://www.goodreads.com/swap
and, of course, individual Goodreads members loan/give books to other members all the time.

Since we are all on many diverse GR groups, it might be nice to have a folder where we could post giveaway links like Misfit just did. I am always hoping I'll win a book!

Jeannette, Feel free to start a thread. Start it in the just to chat folder, I think. Lee, you can always move it to the general folder or wherever you'd like it.
Lee took care of it. I hope I find a giveaway that interests me & that I finally win something! :)

Lisa, the swap program is not avalaible for all countries, at least not yet. Sometimes we send books to each other as passport books...
