Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments 2010 Reading Goal - 60 Books

I think I'm going to pull back a tad from my monster reading sprees of 10+ books a month. This year I'm going to do about 5 per month. 2 of the 5 will be marked for my bi-weekly book club picks. My other goal is to read at least 5 classics this year.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Classic Novels for 2010
1) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
2) Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
3) The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
4) Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
5) Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

I'll mark these classics off whenever I finish reading them.

Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are awesome. The last three are on my to read shelf, though I tried Anna Karenina in my teens and gave up. Now that I am a couple of decades older, I would like to restart it.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments In school we were going to read Wuthering Heights but the curriculum changed and I forget what other classic we read instead. I've been wanting to read a Bronte sister for a long while. And Anna Karenina is going to be my biggest hurdle but it'll be worth the effort!

What about the Bronte books appealed most to you?

message 6: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 4853 comments I hated and loved the hero (?antihero) of wuthering heights - I deeply felt all the insults hurled upon him and later when his character became more dark, I was praying against hope that he would change and become like what he was earlier.
Somehow that story has stayed with me despite having read it long back.
Jane Eyre - I just remember that I devoured the book in a couple of days.

message 7: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I read Jane Eyre for a CoL group read a while ago. It started off very slowly for me. I felt that every tragedy or injustice possible was heaped on to poor little Jane's shoulders. It got better once she got to Rochester's house.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments I may have to wait until the weather turns brighter before I tackle the Bronte Sisters. My book club picked Russian Lit during winter. Talk about depressing! :P

Think I'll do Wuthering Heights around V-Day :)

message 9: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Lately haven't been too much into reading. I was going to read Notes from the Underground for book club but I think I'm going to cancel. I simply cannot take discussing a depressing book on my birthday. :/

message 10: by Ahtims (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments I was a bit worried that I had missed saying Happy Birthday to you...but your birthday is on the 27th right? Have you got weekend plans to celebrate? Hope you have a great week for your big day!

message 13: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Yup! My bday is the 27th. I haven't any plans. No one is going to be around which is why I'm flunking on reading my book club selection :P

Not sure what to do!

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Awwwww!! Thanks everyone!!

Didn't do anything but planned to use the weekend to try out some new recipes I found! One are Jumbo Burger Cups! Sounds very delicious and fun to make! And the other is a caramel chai smoothie!

Oh and I bought myself ice cream cupcakes. HIGHLY recommend Cold Stone's. MMm Mmm Mmm. Eat it with King Cake!

message 18: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Your caramel chai smoothie sounds good! Did you make it....was it good? Did you make the Burger Cups? Hope you had a great weekend!

message 19: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Lots of snow this weekend put a halt to grocery shopping. Luckily, I have the recipes on me so I can hit the store on the way home. Burger Cups tonight! The chai smoothie will be on hold SOLELY b/c I have a large amount of King Cake and cupcakes to finish first :P

Reading is slow. On chapter one for Middlemarch and The Woman Behind the New Deal. Talk about BEING BEHIND! ARG!

message 20: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments I have been a poor reader! I'm 7 books behind my goal of 5 per month! EEP! Must dig in!

message 22: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments I am now 5 books behind!! This means for March, my goal is 10 books! EEP!

message 24: by Usako (new)

message 26: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Hugging The Book Thief right now. Just finished and the last lines couldn't have been more poignant. I'm left with a sensation of happiness for reading this book (not that the entire book is about joy!).

message 27: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Six books away from keeping to my goal of 5 per a month!! I had to make up for lost months. The Postmistress didn't live up to my expectations. I may end up donating this book to the library.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Memories of the Future - Volume 1 by Wil Wheaton Memories of the Future - Volume 1 by Wil Wheaton GOODREADS AUTHOR (4 Stars)

Wil Wheaton can do no wrong in this hilarious and insightful look at the first half of ST:TNG Season 1. We're treated to behind-the-scenes memories accompanied by the geekry humor which we know and love. Who else but Wheaton himself could berate the character he portrayed but in a way to draw out giggles and not a villianous riot comparable to the villagers in Shelley's Frankenstein (although alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die was along those lines for they waited hopefully for the day when it would happen!). This "yearbook" novel makes me eager for Volume 2 and to re-watch Season 1 yet again (for the X amount of times!).

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments *dance parties* Loved The Thirteenth Tale but cannot comment further until after Book Club tomorrow. HEE!

message 30: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Finally caught up with my 5 books a month rule. Now in April, I can read a little slower if I wish.

message 31: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Catch Of The Day by Kristan Higgins Catch Of The Day by Kristan Higgins (4 Stars)

After reading this novel, I can understand why it won a RITA award in 2008. It's heartwarmingly amusing accompanied by well-written dialogue. Normally I wouldn't recommend romance but this novel is the exception to the rule.

message 32: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Boy am I behind on my reading goals. Only 2 books for this month? MEEP!

Finished Cleopatra's Daughter and found I rather enjoyed it.

message 33: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments For August, I should be at 40 books already. Only at 31 since I was behind a couple of months prior. So 9 more books to go in order to be back on track!

message 35: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Sweetness - DONE!
Nearly a quarter into My Life.
Lies is on hold.

Will be powering through The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier's Education after My Life. It's a book club read. And following that may be Home: A Memoir of My Early Years!!

message 36: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Four more books in order to reach my goal of 5 books a month.

Putting Lies on hold until next month. Finished off The Unforgiving Minute and now picking My Life back up. Afterwards, it's onto Catching Fire to prepare for MOCKINGBIRD!

message 37: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Page 216 of My Life in France! Been falling asleep whenever I start to read. I suspect I don't want to finish the book so I have a bit to read every day! HEEE! Pushing myself harder to finish because I do want to finish the Hunger Games series by the end of this week!

message 38: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I admire your willpower! I would say the heck with a book that was putting me to sleep and move on to Catching Fire!

message 39: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments DONE with My Life in France and I POWERED through Catching Fire! Now I'm biting my tongue to hold off on Mockingjay until September so I can use it for the Fall Reading Challenge. Hee!

message 40: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Two more books to meet my goal!

message 41: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments I made my goal! WOOHOOO! Admittedly reading those two YA fairy tales (for a seasonal reading challenge) didn't take me so long. Now to try to finish Treasure Island by tomorrow!

message 42: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments I am so far behind. 16 books to finish between now and the end of December. Does anything believe I can pull off this feat?

message 43: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Reading Learning to Bow: Inside the Heart of Japan atm. Then need to read a play or short stories for my RL book club.

message 44: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Haven't seen you here lately, Tanja. Hope all is well.

I don't usually read short stories, but How to Breathe Underwater I liked.

message 45: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments Thanks Jennifer W! Lots of crazy med appointments and stuff kept me away. Plus new job :)

Glad to be back!!
