Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) If you have read any nature books, or books that include the natural world as a focus, please discuss them here.

Manybooks I don't know if you would classify the following book, Lost Ark: New and Rediscovered Animals of the Twentieth Century by Karl Shuker a science or a nature book. However, I found (and find) it very comforting to read about the discovery of new animal species (and the rediscovery of species long believed to be extinct); it gives me some hope for the survival of nature, even in the face of rampant growth and development.

Chrissie Lisa, do we put dog, cat, wolf, elephant or animal books here? And birds - a read a marvelous book about an owl. I will have to dig up the title!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Yes, Chrissie. This is the perfect folder for those books. I can't wait to find new books to read in this category!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie and All,

When you shelve those animal books, obviously put them on the nature shelf, but also put them on all shelves that apply, such as biographies-and-memoirs, science, tear-jerkers, etc. etc. Thanks!

ETA: Lee and I are shelving books that aren't put on the bookshelves and adding shelves for books too. If you need it, feel free to ask for help putting books on the group's bookshelf.

This may be a good place to talk about gardening books. :-) I was just shelving Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim and was reminded that many people putter about in their gardens to relax.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Oh, one book that I can look at forever that I'll shelve under art and nature both, that's kind of a gardening book is In and Out of the Garden by Sara Midda. She draws miniature plants like nobody else. Just beautiful and very peaceful and fun to peruse.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'll add these Chrissie. (ETA: the ones that aren't already shelved, that is.)(ETA again: According to the records, Merle's Door has already been added, but I can't find it on the shelves. If any member can, please post in this thread which shelf/shelves you found it on, and I will add it to all applicable shelves. Thanks so much!)

I have the first two on my to-read shelf but haven't heard of the other three. Thanks for the list!

Chrissie ETA means what? Merle's Dore I put under Tear Jerkers - the end is quite difficult. It is a fabulous book that shows how dogs do think, about personal relationships with animals and lots of info into the science behind dog mentality. Don't be put off by the ending. Isn't love coupled with sorrow. You cannot get the best without touching the worst. Wolf Totem was mentioned elsewhere. The Snoring Bird is also a memoir. Heinrich Bernd, the author, has written several fabulous books, but his memoir is best. I think! Winter World: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival should also be noted. Modoc is very exciting. I recently finished this. It is plot driven rather than contemplative. Lisa you simply must reald the owl book.

I will add Tasha Tudor's Garden She was a children's book illustrator. I haven't read this in a long while, but remember how beautiful it was.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, Thanks. That book looks lovely. I think I might add it to my shelves! I love Tasha Tudor's illustrations.

Chrissie Lisa, I experimented around and now I have figured out how to add books to the bookshelves. That ought to lighten yours and Lee's job? Thanks again for inviting me!!!!!

Chrissie,

We're so glad you're in this group.

Re the shelving books: Thanks. That's so nice of you and we appreciate your help very much! Lee & I are both happy to shelve books but if you'd like to help, we certainly welcome that. I figure that you (and everyone who posts books they've enjoyed) are likely to do a better job of making sure each book is on all its applicable shelves, although, when we shelve books, unless we know the book well, Lee & I do both go to books' pages to research it as best as we can.
