I think this is an especially effective device with a historical novel. I loved how the perspective of "later" kept informing the past. I also really liked knowing how the main character was a survivor--her personality and also literally surviving this horrid practice.
Hope that's not a spoiler!! I only saw that rule *after* I posted. [cringe:] I didn't mean to be a bad discusser!
