I really like The Silmarillion... there's something about the structure and rhythm to the story. It begs to be read aloud :)

This is on my to-read shelf. I'm currently re-reading LOTR, though, so I'll probably give it a while before I tackle this one. Not sure how much Tolkien I can take without a break for something a bit lighter.

I'll have to agree with you on that one. I liked it too (and like to read aloud too), when I finally finished it. But seriously, I bought it back in 1990 and it's been haunting me ever since. But I guess I wasn't ready before.
#4 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - RoseannaNice one. First in a series of 10 with swedish investigator Martin Beck.
#5 - Michael Romkey - I, Vampire: The Confessions of a Vampire - His Life, His Loves, His Strangest Desires ...Not the greatest book on vampires, but a nice touch with all the historical characters
#6 - Danny Sugerman & Jerry Hopkins - No One Here Gets Out AliveSuberb.....how I love to read about people who made a difference (to me he did at least).

I LOVED this book! I read it when I was in High school. I had the biggest crush on him! But then I read about some the things he did I was like "What a jerk!" but I still enjoyed the book!
Yeah I felt much the same. The guy has been a god of mine since I was a teenager, and still is. But after I read the book, he became more of an actual person, with real problems and serious bloody issues. Wich is cool, I liked the book a lot.
#7 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Man Who Went Up in SmokeAnother crime for anti hero Martin Beck to solve. Not as good as the first, but a nice read.

Rasmus, I've never heard of the Martin Beck series, and I feel like I've been missing out!

Well, if you are into realistic everyday life of a depressed - almost divorced - swedish investigator, combined with great crime solving, then you are.
#8 - Preben Mørkbak - Sven Tveskæg - Danernes sidste vikingA semiauthentic story about the formative years of the last true viking king of the danes Sven Haraldson Tveskæg. Brilliant.....if you like danish history and viking legends.
Officially he was a christian, but in his heart a true son of the north!
#9 - Stan Nichols - Bodyguard Of Lightning: Orcs First BloodNothing special, but quite funny at times. An original idea at least, and I have to admit I've always loved orcs.
#11 - Scott Lynch - The Lies of Locke LamoraBrilliant Cosa Nostra style swashbuckling fantasy debut from Lynch.....made me laugh a lot.
#12 - Albert Sanchez Piñol - Cold SkinQuirky little story of the coexistence of two - to each other - alien races.
#13 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Man on the BalconyAnother crime for Martin Beck to solve.....and he doesn't like it one little bit.
#14 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Laughing PolicemanNice to be back in business after a very long month of strictly work related reading.

Ah, yes. I've "been there, done that" a time or two. Glad you've had some time again recently for recreational reading!
#15 - Gene Wolfe - The Shadow of the TorturerSublime cutting edge fantasy, but a little too surreal and heavy for my taste theese days. Interesting read still.
#16 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - The Fire Engine That DisappearedBook 5 in the Martin Beck series.....they're getting better and better.
#17 - Erlend Loe - DopplerHysterically funny......found myself laughing out quite loudly in the middle of all these people on the train. Doppler with the DICK!
#18 - Scott LynchRed Seas Under Red SkiesSecond Volume of The Gentleman Bastards. Still swashbuckling, still surprising. And now with pirates! Great read.
#19 - Erlend Loe - Volvo LastvagnarMister Doppler is back! Not as far out as the first one, but definitely a worthy sequel.
#20 - Stan Nicholls - Legion of Thunder: Orcs First Blood, Book 2Not enough orcness.....had some moments, but generally quite boring.
#21 - Sjöwall & Wahlöö - Murder at the SavoyYet another Martin Beck story. He's still miserable and hates his job, but at least he gets laid in this one.

LOL!
#22 - Adrian Tchaikovsky - Empire in Black and GoldAll right, but not great. A friend of mine told me the series get better. I hope he's right.
#23 - Sjöwal & Wahlöö - The Abominable ManThe 7th Martin Beck story and the best so far. When reading these books, one can really see where contemporary scandinavian crimewriters Jo Nesbø and Stieg Larsson come from.
#24 - Morten Ramsland - SumobrødreQuirky little story of children growing up in Denmark in the eighties. A rough story of bullying, victimizing and the mysteries of the grown up's world told from a child's point of view.
Reminds me of the feeling in Bjarne Reuter's old children's books.
Great read.
#25 - Darren Shan - A Living NightmareOne of my pupils told me to read this one. Great children's book. A bit darker than most.
#27 - Glen Cook - The Black CompanyBloody surreal fantasy.....in the words of Steven Erikson: "It's like reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote". It's dirty, it's hopeless, it's quite confusing at times. But great nonetheless.
#29 - Kenneth Bøgh Andersen - Den Forkerte Død3rd volume in Bøgh Andersen's The Great Devil War series. Quite entertaining.
#31 - Trudi Canavan - The Ambassador's MissionBoring.....wouldn't have finished it, if this challenge wasn't haunting me. Don't think I'll make it this year.
#32 - Slash - SlashThe mad hatter speaks out. A bit tedious when you get to the umphteenth strung out junkie passage, but still, he's a bloody legend and seems like a genuinely nice person.
Rasmus wrote: "#33 - Justin Cronin - The PassageBloody great read......of doom!"
I really loved this one too... can't wait for the next one to come out! :)
#35 - Knud Holten - FeberfrihedWhat a wonderful book from (in my opinion) the best writer of lies and adventure and imaginations. I wish that you were all able to understand the danish language and read this one. A semi-autobiographical acid induced road trip.
Hopefully I'll make halfway to the 75. Perhaps I'll go for 50 in 2011 then.
Too bad it's not available in English. There are so many wonderful books and authors out there that never get translated. It's really a shame.Good luck making the halfway mark by the end of the year! I'm sure you can do it.
#36 - Joe Abercrombie - Best Served ColdAnother foul cunt of a book from the master of violent, dirty and gritty fantasy. Not quite as good as his first trilogy, but a great great read nevertheless.
