Outlander Series discussion

So I saw somewhere on here, recommendations for Deanna Raybourne's 'Silent in The Grave'. I couldn't remember where I saw it, hence the new thread. Now who have read these books? Anything more you can tell me about them? Also, while looking for the first Deanna Raybourne book, I stumbled accross another book that intrigued me. (Oh boy, my TBR list is getting ridiculously long)

I've read Denna Rayburn's books. Well all except the last one. They're kind of a mix of romance with paranormal, heavier on the romance. I thought they were really good.

I read The Russian Concubine by Kate Furnivall. It is a good book but not as addicting as the Outlander series. It is quite intriguing though- a Russian girl living in a camp in China (it's been a long time so I don't really remember much). There's a sequel to it called The Girl from Junchow but I have not read it yet.

Ann, is the Shift series good? I have thought about trying it.

Before I started the Outlander series I read Jean M. Auel's: The Clan of the Cave Bear, The Valley of Horses, The Mammoth Hunters, The Plains of Passage, The Shelters of Stone.
They are all amazing books with details of all kinds, and in depth of all the characters' emotional lives.
I highly recommend them, once you have finished the Outlander series.
After I first read Jean's series, I was lost for a new book to read. I didnt think anything could some up to her Clan of the Cave Bear series. But then I was introduced to Claire and Jamie...now my reading as taken off once again. I dont know what I am going to do once I am done their series. Probably will have to reread them again!

Thx Katelyn; I have this whole series, but have read very mixed reviews.

Katelyn, I also read and enjoyed the "Cave Bear" series many years ago then re-read them again in 2008. If you liked them and the Outlander Series, you may also like Ken Folletts two books, The Pillars of the Earth and the follow-up book World Without End.

The Follett stories are what I call two great middle ages/medieval soap operas. They are fun, educational, and interesting--a very good peek into history.

I just started watching "The Tudors" series on DVD from Netflix. Can't afford Showtime on cable. The costumes and settings are very attractive. The story unfolds before our Jamie and Claire's era but the clothing, etc. are interesting to see. While watching, I kept thinking that this effort is how the Outlander Series should be treated on TV, not just a movie or brief commercial TV series. The Outlander Series story and history are way too "rich" to be treated in the usual commercial (unrealistic and insensitive) way.

'The Tudors' is an excellent series. I too watched the first 3 seasons. I didnt realize that its in th same era of Jamie and Claire because I wantch The Tudors before reading the book and just didnt make the conection.

it's not quite the same era.. The Tudor's was in the turn of the 16th century, where as Outlander is based well into the 18th century. But I totally agree with the whole 'tudor-esque' series for Outlander. I honestly think It is the ONLY way to do it justice.

Shell is right, the Tudors are well before the Claire and Jamie era. Remember, in The Tudors, King Henry gets rid of the "Papist" catholic church (Cardinal Woolsey) so he can divorce Katherine and marry Anne Boelyn, thus taking England into the Protestant era. In the 1700s (Claire and Jamie's time) the English are now Protestant and the Scots are still Papist.

Still, TV and movies sure do make "learning history" a lot easier and entertaining. Yes, I know, accuracy is lost in entertainment but still, the overall lessons of history are there.

Shell, weren't we going to read Clan of the Cave Bear? What ever happened with that? Is Rhonda ready yet?
Also, maybe we should try reading Pillars of the Earth again, although last time I couldn't make it past the first chapter....but everyone else seems to like it.

I really enjoyed this series. Great imagination for the time period - liked the main characters. I have been to the Durdogne area in France where there are many caves in the hillsides. Also the Caves at Lescaux are in the region. Prehistoric art in caves fascinates me. I like to imagine that is the area in which they finally reached.

The Tudors is a wonderful piece of entertainment, but I'm afraid my old history teacher would be turning in his grave if anybody thought it was anything like accurate history. The newspaper TV reviewers here in Britain liked to point out that the series was made mainly for an American audience who were not really interested in British history. Having been a member of this Diana Gabaldon group for quite a while, I know that is not the case.

Recently I saw a public TV show about prehistoric peoples (recent discoveries,etc.) and the narrator said the research reflected in Jean Auel's CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR series is worth several doctorate degrees. Very high praise for the validity of her books. And she is a good storyteller, too.

I have read this whole series twice and I think it is wonderful epic story telling. Her background research, which I have checked on some of it, is amazing. Jondalar is another one of those "great heros" like Jamie. Ayla is who all we women hope to be inside. The books are great reading and I would recommend them to anyone who likes the OUtlander series.

Because of the Olympics in Canada now, I was reminded to reread one of my all time favorite books. "Mrs. Mike" by Benedict and Nancy Freedman. My Grandmother gave it to me about 45 years ago to read and every time I reread it, I feel that it has lost NOTHING in the time it has been in print.
It does not seem antiquated at all.
The story is set in Alberta, Canada when it was still a wilderness. The heroine who moves there because of a medical problem is wonderful and I love her as much as Claire. The hero is the Mountie she marries and sets up a life with in a very harsh country. He is amazing...maybe not Jamie, but still one of those Heros that we all love. There is a love story, adventure, heartbreak and all the things that make a great story. It is a short read, but amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves the OUtlander series. YOu can get a used copy on Amazon for about $2.50. Have fun, and let me know what you think.

Just completed A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Taking a break before starting Echo in the Bone and reading Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. May read Wild Scots by Michael Fry next.

By the way, I read Jean M. Auel's book years ago and loved them all!

I read The Clan of the Cave Bear years ago when I was in Jr. High. I got in big trouble for passing the book to all my friend in the cafeteria to read the hot sex scenes! (hot to a 12 year old anyways!) I loved that series and have been thinking I should go back and re-read. Every time I do that, though, I end up not liking a book as much as I did the first time and that bums me out.

Good point, Christy! Has anyone gone back and reread the Clan of the Cave Bear series and could let us know how it read the second go round? I've reread the first couple of Outlander books to get up to speed on the story (also have the Outlandish Companion)and, I must admit, enjoyed them more the second time!

I loved the Clan of the Cave Bear series but only read it once. Loved Jondalar...but not as much as Jaime or Alexander. But, still a good read. I've been waiting a few years for the next book. Jean Auel takes even longer between books than Diana Gabaldon.

Yes, I have read the whole OUtlander series twice except for the last book. I love the series. I found Outlander shortly after it came out when I was in an airport and needed something to read. IT has been a long wait in between every book, so I keep trying to find other series or books to fill the voids in between.

Just read the Bronze Horseman. it's was another beautiful epic love story that those who loved outlander should read. I also just finished Into the wilderness by Sara Donati. Enjoy ladies!!

Also loved The Clan of the Cave Bear series, although I don't own them. My mother leant them to me a few years back.

I've been re-reading The Outlander Series in anticipation of finally reading An Echo in the Bone. I just started ABOSAA. I've also been reading the All Creatures Great and Small series by James Herriot for the 2nd time; I'm on the 3rd book, All Things Wise and Wonderful. Very sweet books set in England just before WWII about a Yorkshire veterinary surgeon.

I just finished .. - I’ve always liked Johanna Lindsey’s books (the ones she wrote in the 90’s) and wanted a light read before starting ABOSAA. I tried really hard not to make comparisons to the Outlander series, but I must say I failed. I miss Diana’s writing! I truly liked the story line in “Prisoner of my Desire” and have read it in the past… The hero & heroine reminded me of Claire & Jamie and I kept thinking how Diana could have taken that story to a whole new level. The hero’s whole family is murdered when he is 16 while he is away training to be a knight – that whole story took up one single page! I remember in Outlander when J&C leave the inn (after she gets her spankin’) and he tells her about his father and the things he experienced while he was young. That endeared me to him and made me love him and I missed that in this book…. The reason I think we love Jamie & Claire is that we actually feel like we know them through Diana’s stories and descriptions. I miss the depth of Diana’s writing and now I’m even more inclined to start ABOSAA. I also bought recently , and I thinki will love it but don’t want to start another series until I’ve finished Outlander.
I guess I did get the nice light read I was looking for, but I think Diana has changed me.......

Sure!!! I was planning on starting them after I read Echo. I prefer not to read books simultaneously, especially if they are part of a series.

Maybe we can get Heather in as well…. I remember reading that she hadn’t gotten to it either…..

Just checking into the discussion after several weeks. What a coincidence, I just bought the Ward/Black Dagger series and started to reread from Dark Lover. If you have not read it, you are in for a treat. Read the whole series from the library and just bought it and rereading for the second time.

What is ABOSAA? It looks like I may try the Clan series....
