Is anyone trying to read all the books on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before you Die? Or just some of the books?

http://www.listsofbests.com/list/5756...
Website for 2008 edition

Post the books read from the 1001 Books , reviews, and any type of discussion for them.

Kate (katemreads) | 46 comments Hush Hush and the City of Bones series. I also loved the book Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan Boys. It was a really great kind of romatic comedy.

Allie :: literarilythrilling (literarilythrilling) I keep meaning to print this list off and keep up with what I've read and what I haven't. I'd like to mark off quite a few of these.

message 4: by KrisT (new)

KrisT I love the list of bests sites. They keep track of the books you have read on many lists out there, definitive or not. I have been working on the 1001 list for awhile but not getting very far.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I went through some of the list but I haven't looked through the whole thing. I found many of the books that I seen that were on my TBR shelf. However, most I have are not read yet. I want to get more of them checked off but don't want to read all of them. Some of them are def not up my alley. I like to step outside of my comfort but I know it wont be nearly enough to complete this list.

That's pretty much my thinking. I want to at least give all of the books I can get a hold of a try. If I don't finish it, I'm okay with that, but I'd like to at least say I gave them all a try.

Yes, there are quite a few that I would never bother with, honestly. I'm going to try to push my boundaries but I rather like my reading rut =]

message 7: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) I just looked at the top fifty books on this list. I have absolutely zero interest in completing any book on this list. Nothing interested me!

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

It's kind of funny that the list is compromised of the must reads and lots of people don't have interest in them. Perhaps the people choosing the books need to step out of their box and have more variety.

message 9: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 130 comments There sure are a lot of classics on the list. I am trying to start reading some of the classics. I have to stop giving them a bad name from school days. I have The Count of Monte Cristo and Jane Eyre ordered at my library. I have heard really good things about both of these, so I thought that would be a good place to start.

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books. I have Jane Eyre on my TBR list =]

That is a good idea. It is what I think about many of the Awarded books. Pulitzer, Booker, Orange etc. I have to wonder sometimes who the judges are?

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

How much they get paid? Did they even read the book?

message 13: by Madelyn (new)

Madelyn (mad31lina) | 1 comments Of the 1001 books, I read: The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, the Two Towers, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, Crash, Animal Farm, Pippi Longstocking, and To Kill A Mockingbird. And I really want to read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

message 14: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 130 comments I am only up to 350, but I would venture to say that I have never even heard of over half of the books on the list so far. That's kind of a sad commentary, isn't it?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I know Memoirs of a Geisha is on the list but not until like page 17. I think that is the only book that most everyone has heard.

message 16: by Denise (new)

Denise (redreader) | 34 comments Ok so I have a few of these under my belt, but I have lots of work to do. I may bring this list up in the book club!

message 17: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 130 comments So far, there are a few that I have on my TBR, but I don't think I have read any of them up to 350.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Same for me. Most of them are TBR.

message 19: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 130 comments I don't get it. There are probably 80% of the 500 I have gone through so far that I never even heard of. How can they be that great if nobody has heard of them, at least I haven't?

message 20: by Julie (new)

Julie S. I looked at some of list, and many of them I've never even heard of. I guess this means some intense library browsing is in order...

message 21: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 10, 2010 05:15PM) (new)

The Charmed Series, it's funny, vindictive and just addictive. My cousin shelby got me hooked on it and I haven't been able to not read them ever since.

message 22: by Jill (new)

Jill | 2 comments I went through the list and I know I won't read all 1001 books. I think the list is good for finding books to read but I think I die quite fine not reading all of them. Good to see there are international books on the list.

message 23: by Cathrine (new)

Cathrine (cathrine_bock) I'm only %2 through the list, but I think I'll take a stab at it. Lots of great stuff on there that I wanted to read anyway.

message 24: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) Are there better choices after the top 50 on this list?

message 25: by Cathrine (new)

Cathrine (cathrine_bock) Yes. It's sorted chronologically, so the earlier works are quite a bit more obscure.

message 27: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) why dont you make a list on listopia?

message 28: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) Thanks for posting that link to listofbests - I love lists like that, and just had a great time at the library. :)

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Your welcome :) OOhh... what did you get at the library?

message 30: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I got:

The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald (finished today)
The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho (reading now)
The Girl with the Pearl Earring - Tracy Chevalier
Unless - Carol Shields
Here on Earth - Alice Hoffman
Dark Places - Gillian Flynn

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

The Girl with a Pearl Earring. Oh, I read that one. It was good. I even went to go see the painting in NYC. Although, I can't think exactly which museum it was in. I think the Metropolitan.

message 32: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I wasn't wowed by Girl with a Pearl Earring. Peter Mayle wrote a book - Chasing Cezanne: A Novel that I liked much more. I love art, and visit museums whenever I get to better sized cities.

message 33: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 25, 2010 07:29PM) (new)

I just posted a link to my blog for an artist I like, Fritz Scholder, on the Blog Post topic under discussions.

If you are interested.

whats that book about?

message 35: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 26, 2010 09:30AM) (new)

Click for my review.

It is a Historical Fiction book based on the one painting that Johannes Vermeer painted.

http://aworldofpersonality.blogspot.c...

I also posted my photos of the painting from the MET this summer. (Photos taken with no flash of course, so they are a tad grainy.)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) sounds nice

message 37: by Tiamat_the_red (new)

Tiamat_the_red | 13 comments The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books. I have Jane Eyre on my TBR list =]

Me too! (The Count, not Jane Eyre). It's a great adventure and marvelous revenge. If you've ever seen the TV show Life, that show feels an awful lot like it must have been based on that book. If you've seen the movie, ignore it and read the book.

message 38: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) I loved the book Jane Eyre. I totally identified with the main character of Jane. You will enjoy it!

message 39: by Angela (new)

Angela B I looked at 3 pages of the list and haven't read a single one of these...hmmm

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

That was how I felt... Did you even hear of any? I did hear that they try to go in order. The newer books are supposed to be at the end of the list.

message 41: by Angela (new)

Angela B Hmmm I went to the last page and still hadn't read any of those. I had heard of one or two but that's it.
I prefer to read things I enjoy even if they don't have a lot of meaning to them and I think most those books are suppose to have meaning...if you know what I mean lol

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I like to read for enjoyment and knowledge. I tend to get a good mix of everything. It can be funny because it kind of bothers my friends. They read only in a certain book bubble (I would say genre but they seem to pick books with their own qualifications.) and since I bounce around so much we either can't swap books or talk about what was read, currently read, or coming out soon. At least not much.

message 43: by Angela (new)

Angela B I read a lot of genres but it mostly fun books.

message 44: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ i read just about anything, but i don't read a lot of sci/fi, thrillers or horror. i will read a book based on a good recommendation.

message 45: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) Elizabeth wrote: "i read just about anything, but i don't read a lot of sci/fi, thrillers or horror. i will read a book based on a good recommendation."

LOL, Elizabeth. :) If you want some suggestions for the thriller/horror, let me know. Those are typically my "candy" reads.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I think your reading is more well rounded if you can pick up books in multi genres. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who ventures around.

message 47: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) Okay I tried again. I got a little further in the list. I still didn't find any books that I want to read. I did find one that I had read which is Jane Eyre. I really did try.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I really wonder who picks these books out. The list seems to be just as boring as the books on the list. Of course, there has to be some criteria that they use, I just wonder what it is.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I wonder if our group can come up with a 1001 books list that is better then that. I bet we could.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Life of Pi is on the list. I have not read it personally but I seen this one being mentioned several times.
