The Numbers
Of course we only have Smokey/Locke's word for it that the numbers/names come from Jacob. I was very dubious about his explanations when he himself crossed out Locke's name.Has anyone found a blog/website with stills from the cave walls? I read on Alan Sepinwall's blog that people saw Kate's name with no number? I had a rough time making out the crossed out names.
A friend of mine last night noticed that all the names with numbers were guys... (assuming that it's Jin Kwon and not Sun...) Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn't...
I wonder if some are candidates to guard the island and some aren't? Seems like Sawyer has been offered the job by NotLocke. What does guarding the island mean exactly - being there for eternity?
I answered my own question! Lostpedia has a running list of names on the cave wall, whether it's crossed off and where they came from: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Jacob...
I love how they keep teasing us with the importance of the numbers, but still don't explain what the MEAN. :P
I love this. What obsessed fans we have out there, that the DAY after the episode airs, we have screen shots and information to answer all our questions :)
I still feel like the numbers mean something. The fact that all the other names have seemingly random numbers while "our" losties have THE numbers seems significant, like Jacob had been waiting all tbose years for just the right combination of people (and numbers) and eventually had to go out and bring them in himself.
The numbers are in no way a coincidence - Lindelof and Cuse even said that. There's nothing about LOST that's coincidence. However, regarding the number 23 being combined with the name (Jack) Shepherd, I couldnt' help but think of the 23rd Psalm that starts with "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want..." Maybe that has no significance, but it was a thought.
Yeah, that is so interesting! I can't believe I haven't thought of that before! :D Everyone at my church watches Lost, too, and now I can bring that up and look like the smart one. ;)
notice how all the names associated with the numbers are male, so i am guessing maybe these potential names will replace jacob and protect the island...
i also noticed, another number next to ford, on the wall, 313 littleton... it may either be claire or aaron who might have been a candiate because 313= 16 and that is one of the numbers..
Littleton and Kwon were on the wall, neither states whether it is the male or female of that name... so we cant say for sure that they are all male.
but there was no kate on the wall, and jacob did visit her, hopefully we will get an explaination of that as well..
ok, maybe we will see her eventually....i just think that even though she was on the island and visited by jacob early on its kinda of weird that she was not shown among the numbers.
Ok, so the numbers DO mean something.. they are the location of our losties by degrees on the lighthouse turntable!!!!
Very interesting.....
Very interesting.....
yes, and it seems like each degree is the location of where each lostie is located and that is how jacob watched them, now we are getting somewhere
Jacob is kind of a creeper. And Jack is so reckless, shattering the mirror. And I wonder where the degree 108 was going. I'm pretty sure there were 108 passengers...
Kate was listed on the Lighthouse wheel as #51 and was not crossed out. But 108 is the other candidates numbers summed up, not her number.
I don't think you can use the numbers as actual bearings of the losties locations because that would spread them all over the globe. 4 degrees would be just slightly NNE of the island, 8 a little further East, etc. putting everyone NE of the island. Of course the island location is currently unknown but if the numbers were associated from when the island was between Australia and Fiji the 42 MIGHT throw a bearing to California but nothing further East (Iowa for Kate or Korea for Jin and Sun). And of course the 108 would be South of Fiji. Could be a new character we haven't met yet I guess.Basically I think the bearins were references not actual bearings. Of course, you can't see something reflected in a mirror that isn't actually there in real life either so who knows. ;)
Lonnie, maybe you misunderstood my post? I just stated the numbers are linked to the degrees on the lightpost turntable, not ACTUAL degrees as in longitude and latitiude.
Jacob did say that someone was coming and wanted Hurley to turn the lighthouse table to 108, but I think that was just a fluke to get Jack up there.
Time will tell though!

Jacob is quite a trickster, but seems to know everyone so well, what makes them tick, and how to use that knowledge to make them do what he wants.
I am starting to wonder about him... As NotLocke said to Richard.. why follow someone who withholds information from you? Why is Jacob leading everyone by secrecy?

Nice observation, Alex. Yeah, that seems too much of a conincidence for it to all be random...but Jack is probably one of the most important characters. I think I remember reading somewhere that Matthew Fox was originally the first person to know the ending to Lost. It's weird to think that in the original manuscript they killed him off in act 2 of the pilot.
Yeah, we noticed that (23rd Psalm/Shephard/David) stuff as well. There's a lot more the could tie in there... with the characters and forgiveness... as well, some of the lines, rather than the actions stuck out to me.
Something else of note, (and maybe this should go under a different thread)
But it was pointed out to me that ALL of the characters either have bad relationships with their fathers, or their father's aren't present. Think of anybody in the show that doesn't apply to...
I wonder if Jack will become the good father for David, and if that means anything.

And Jack's father's name was Christian. I wonder if that is significant....
I thought the same thing about Jack's son. There really is a lot of similiarities between him and the biblical David, especially since in the Bible, when David was young he was a shepherd and a musician. I was also wondering if Sarah (Jack's ex-wife) is David's mom, or if Jack was with someone else in this alternate timeline.Sorry, getting way off topic...
We all seem to be so sure about who is the good one, who is the evil one... maybe Jacob isn't the white-good character we think he is.Oh, and have you any idea who is going to visit the tample? And why Jacob decided to save only Harley and Jack? Aren't Said, Miles and Kate important any more???
Im pretty sure Jacob is preparing them for NotLocke to enter the Temple.
Maybe Jacob has other plans for Sayid, and Miles right now.
Kate is currently off on her own right now, she is not at the temple.

Her and Jack could have met at some point in med school or in the hospital since Juliet wouldn't have been on the island.
Lisa wrote: "How crazy would it be if Juliet was David's mom?"Totally crazy, but I love it! I hadn't thought of that possible twist, but it's ripe with juiciness!
I was under the assumption it was Jacks ex... but Juliet would be a funny twist.
We have yet to see her in the alt-time line...
We have yet to see her in the alt-time line...
Yeah, I thought that her and Jack were pretty good together...I can't remember much of her for some reason. What happened with her and Jack again?
I have to say - I wasn't initially a big Juliet/Sawyer fan, but they are the better match (as opposed to Kate/Sawyer). Sawyer became a much better man because of Juliet.
I agree. Kate was starting to piss me off when she seemed all shocked that Sawyer didn't immeadiately jump into bed with her after Juliet died.
I did like the softer side of Sawyer, I think it's wonderful and sad that he let Juliet get so close... Sawyer, a marryin' man??? Whodathunk!
Yeah, but Kate kinda bugs me. She needs to decide who she wants to be with. And I kinda hated the Sawyer/Juliet relationship...but wasn't Juliet with Jack first...?

Why THOSE numbers? What did they mean? And what does it mean that they were assigned to our losties? Each name had a number before it.
Its a partial answer, in the sense that we now know the numbers CAME from Jacob - these numbers that have been such a large part of the wonder of the island. But what the hell do they mean?
