Olathe Public Library- GoodReads Branch discussion

"We" are Olathe Public Library staff members (or, in one case, retired staff) and we are librarians, but most importantly we are book lovers and avid readers. At least, that is the "we" that launched this group. We hope you will join us and participate, bring us your likes and dislikes, views and opinions. This is a good spot to introduce yourself, if you are so inclined. The author of this post (me) is Lorie Hyten, a reference librarian and the selector for the fiction collection at the library. Talking about books is one of my favorite activities, so I am looking forward to some lively conversations at the Goodreads branch of OPL!

Hi I'm Rachel. I have been on Goodreads for a couple of years now. I'm excited that you have started an OPL branch on here. I like to read a wide variety of books fiction and non-fiction and discussing them! Everyone should know that even though I'm a teacher, I am a horrible speller. So please over look any mistakes you might notice. I look forward to getting to know the rest of the group better!

Hi! I'm Orrin, I'm a regular patron of the library and have been a Goodreads member for a little over a year so I was really happy to see that there was an OPL group on here.

I write short supernatural and ghost stories. I read a lot of comics and also a lot of horror books, as well as fantasy, science fiction, young adult, and anything else that catches my fancy.

I don't hang out on Goodreads as much as I would like to, but I'm looking forward to being a part of the group.

Welcome, Orrin. It's always good to mix new people in with the group. Some of us are pretty spasmatic about checking the page. (well, I am anyway.) But it's good to see you.

Welcome aboard Orrin! We would really like to get some good discussion threads going here, so feel free to post. Have you read the new horror book by Dan Simmons, "Black Hill?" I started it but it just didn't hold my interest...and its really long! LOL

I haven't actually read any of Dan Simmons' novels yet, due to similar issues of longness, but I've heard good stuff about Drood and The Terror, so they're both on my list.

"The Terror" was one of my favorites from 2009...or was it '08? Anyway, well worth the slog of getting through it, although I thought the ending was perhaps just a tad weak.

Believe it or not, Simmons' actually wrote a fairly short book a few years ago--Song of Kali. I love horror and this one still sends chills down my spine just thinking about it. Very atmospheric.

Hmm. Have to check that one out. He does seem to be particularly good at "atmospheric." Both "The Terror" and "Drood" were just dripping with atmosphere....

The only Simmons I've actually read is his original novella version of "Carrion Comfort," which I quite liked. I'll have to check some of those others out sooner rather than later.
