The Good Master by Kate Seredy is a children's book set in pre-war Hungary. I also recommend the Paul Street Boys by Ferenc Molnar, as well as Upon the Head of the Goat: A Childhood in Hungary 1939-1944 and Under the Frog: A Novel
The Nightmare (A gólyakalifa) by Babits Mihály.Fatelessness (Sorstalanság) by Kertész Imre.
The latter is truly one of a kind in Holocaust literature in my opinion. It really opened my eyes about the fact that we tend to think about the Holocaust as something done by inhumane monsters which is dangerous and ignorant, because that way we comfortably distance it from ourselves. But the fact is that the Holocaust was done by people just like us and that is a scary reality we are not ready to accept.
