Be succinct (I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled, but...). Use as less words as possible. Like, in this sentence, like, I could have, like, not, like, used the word like that many times. The word 'that' is also used too often.Practice proper spelling and grammar and punctuation.
Try to write about characters who are your age or younger, unless you have interviewed an older person.
I got the first tip from Mrs. Slaughter, my Comm. Arts teacher, and the last one from Susan Clymer, the author who visited my school. And practicing good writing skills is just common sense, I guess.

You have to have parents, don't you?

Not in every story. And, I meant, like, if you were trying to write from their point of veiw, or if they were a main character, or a professional.
Eh wrote "You should give your characters slang and/or accent. If you are setting your writing in a foreign country, it's good to add some of their words...."
I bounce between writing in contemporary and fantasy settings, so I have to constantly switch the style of the writing!

Hello everyone, I am new to this group, and writing in general. I've taken Comp I and II while working towards a B.S. as well as written lots of essay papers, etc... However, I would LOVE to try to write a book. Still, I am not sure I really know how to do it. I know I have to select a topic first. Then I should brainstorm, jotting down my ideas in a study format such as diagram, or a sub title with ideas itemized benath. Perhaps research some ideas. Then jot down my sources for citations. I think I want to write ab book on women's issues, and the current evolution of women who want to create change within the patriarchal system. I am not sure if I may be biting off far more than I can chew at this point, however. I also know I should select a topic I am passionate about. I certianly could use help figuring all this out, and getting started on something. Thank you in advance to all who would respond with tips.
Sincerely,
Shelly M.
My pleasure Tim. I'd like to share this cool visual thesaurus by Thinkmap. If anyone has not seen it before, check it out here: http://www.visualthesaurus.com/landin...
:)...so what do you want to be called? Aviva, or something else? I know, I love that Thinkmap. Fun!I think I'll get some books on creative writing because the ones I have are very old. I have a writer's guide from Kaplan U. that is pretty new. But, I need more of a guide on getting started on writing a topic book. I'm guessing not too many people in this group are active, huh? So tell me, have you started writing your book yet?

Show not tell is one that helps me.
