I have read almost every book written by Mary Higgins Clark and although they are not extremely in depth and I do not feel an affinity with the characters as much as would in stories by other authors, all of her stories make you feel good in the end knowing that evil was overcome and happiness was reached. They are typically a very quick read and have intriguing plotlines that won't allow you to put the books down.

This one is the first Mary Higgins Clark read for me, and it was a very long time ago! What I remember is having to stay up until finished, since at the time I was reading it, I had small children and I lived on Cape Cod ... I was definitely "on edge"!
I too read this many years ago and went through my MHC phase. I must revisit her books because it has been a long time but I know I used to love reading them.
Loved this one and lots of other early MHC books but I definitely got sick of her. All characters were always coming home, putting their hair in a chignon and having tea and toast-come on Mary, mix it up a little! That said this book was really good, totally creepy, I didn't want to put it down.
If you start with one of Mary Higgins Clark's new books you may never see the talent she showed in her ealier books. This book and Stillwatch were two of her best books. Later she starts publishing too quickly and co-authoring. She slides out of suspense and into popular fiction. The books start to feel scripted, like Joanie says. These early books, though, are classic suspense and masterfully done!
