I enjoyed The Millennium Trilogy It makes me want to read more series... single books are over so fast!
I have long been a fan of the Adam Dalgliesh series by P.D. James and the Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee series by Tony Hillerman.

I love the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R. King; the first in the series is The Beekeeper's Apprentice.
So many here I have loved! Really enjoyed the Hillerman series, Millenium, and the Robertson Davies.I have really gotten into the Elizabeth George Sgt. Lynley series (except for "What Came Before He Shot her"). There's a new one that I'll probably pick up soon.
A few of my favorite series:Lady Julia Grey by Deanna Raybourn
Lady Emily Ashton by Tasha Alexander
The Hollows series by Kim Harrison
Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
The Negotiator by C.E. Murphy
Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen
The Percy Jackson books by Rick RiordanThe Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins
The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
When I think series I think fantasy and sci-fi, then I think age group you're aiming for and personality:For the younger/early teen readers obviously the Harry Potter series does very well.
I would also recommend the different Dragonlance series by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, I find that each of the separate main storyline trilogies gets more advanced/adult as they advance chronologically so much like Harry Potter the series grows up with you.
Another good set of books for early teens is the Everworld series by Katherine Applegate, if you like mythology and pop culture you'll get a good cross-section in this series (admittedly it's a late 90s pop culture that is being referenced so children of the 21st century might not like or get the pop culture side of the books but they're still quite good).
There is of course, The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien, and everyone should read at least The Hobbit and The Silmarillion to go with it in my opinion.
If you're looking to laugh you can't go wrong with Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series or any of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books.
For serious political sci-fi and fantasy there's Frank Herbert's Dune series and George RR Martin's Song of Ice & Fire series (which is the best written series to date in my opinion, it's just not finished yet).
China Mieville's books based in the world of Bas-Lag aren't necessarily a series, but Mieville provides you with a steady stream of politics, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and horror all rolled into one and done very successfully.
There are plenty of other noteworthy series out there, I had to push myself just list these. There's never a lack of good books out there, just a lack of time to read them all.
My favorites are the Time Quartet by Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in Time, etc.) and the Harry Potter series.
All time favorites are:The Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evonabich
Kay Scarpetta (series) by Patricia Cornwell
The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
Harry Potter by J.K Rowling
And I just started the Millennium Trilogy by Steig Larsson. Kind of a mix of everything.
some of my favorite series in order are:
Trickster series by Tamora Pierce
Maximum Ride by James Patterson
Night World by L.J. Smith
the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith
the Golden Compass (first book) series by Philip Pullman
a Wrinkle in Time (first book) series by Madeline L'Engle
these are all great reads that I would reccomend to anyone!
