Terri | 25 comments Both The Book Thief and Memoirs of a Geisha were amazing. Two of the best books I have read in a looong time!

I thought The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest was the best out of the trilogy but I wasn't a huge fan of the first two books. Don't get me wrong I love Salander and Blomkvist as characters but I just found it hard to keep track of all the other 'side characters' (the police etc). I just felt that Larsson put so many in there it was difficult to bring them to life and make them memorable.

I'm a student so I read all the time, just not for fun!

Em (emmap) | 2683 comments I second that! I completely loved The Book Thief and Memoirs of a Geisha - quality if not quantity eh!

I think 50 books is going to be a challenge for me as well but thought it'd be good to give it a try. Since I've mixed in a few slimmer books with the doorstoppers I may even manage it! Who knows...

I always seem to gravitate towards the doorstops too. Not only do they take a while to get through, they're too big to stuff in your bag and read on the bus....

Really wanting to read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell but I think it's about 700 pages!!!

BTW I haven't read Memoirs of a Geisha. I was put off by the film (seemed a very Hollywood view of Japan). Is the book very different?

The Book Thief has been on my to-read list for a while....

Em (emmap) | 2683 comments I thought Memoirs of a Geisha was an intriguing book, I was fascinated with the story and with the detailed description of the Geisha traditions - I would whole heartedly recommend it.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell I noticed in the charity shop yesterday when I tried and failed to find Catch-22 in any one of the six shops I looked in - I was tempted but it's massive isn't it? I resisted in the end.

Looks like Geisha's going to have to go on my 'to read' list too...

It's one of those books - I remember a period when EVERYONE seemed to be reading it on The Tube (like White Teeth & Captain Corelli's Mandolin)!

Just may take a while for me to get around to it...

Terri | 25 comments I would highly recommend Memoirs of a Geisha - The film didn't 'wow' me as much though.

I wonder if they'll make a film of the Book Thief? They seem to do it with everything nowadays!

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3101 comments I read Memoirs of a Geisha last year and thought it was very good. I have just got a copy of Geisha: A Life (Geisha of Gion) by Mineko Iwasaki Which I shall read as my 'I' in the Authors A-Z

Terri | 25 comments 4. The End Of Mr. Y

An interesting book that I kind of felt had a bit of a identity crisis after 12 chapters, but overall very good.

Thanks Lynne, I shall look out for that one!
