Someone beg really loudly for me to take part in the next Shebang...

Oh, who am I kidding. I'm in. And I already have a theme!

message 12: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Damn, Gus! You and Gretchen need to SLOW DOWN!!!

message 13: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments BTW, Sally... the first 4 lines of your initial post have been entertaining me on and off all afternoon/night. :)

message 14: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments I'd like to give it a shot. I've never done this before, so could someone give me a run down of how this works?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Humph!

message 16: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Gus are you going to share your theme in case it inspires me? I have one in the works but it doesn't really move me.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

In, unless you go the electronic route, then out.

I already have the discs pulled that I couldn't wedge into my first shebang.

message 18: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments you know, would it be possible for someone to explain the deal on a shebang again. i realize me even saying this may honk some of you off and have you do the eye roll deal but i have not been involved in one and really don't know what the big shebang is about a shebang.

secondly, was that a direct gig by sals in the opening comment for this thread? "promise" chuckle chuckle. hardy har har

AND - so what if you only had one arm while breastfeeding. you still should be able to function. heck you could be the drummer for def lepard while breastfeeding if you put your mind to it

You could do it too, Gail... Your postage just might be a bit weighty. :)

A shebang is a mix CD that you make, Kevin. I don't know where the name originated (I wasn't involved with that Shebang exchange). Anyway... you make one mix, do artwork for the CD cover (unless you're RA), throw in a playlist, liner notes are optional... and make however many copies need to be made so that everyone participating gets a copy of your mix.

Then you mail it to the shebang master along with prepaid self addressed envelope or box (should cost the same since you're getting back the same amount you sent out) - in this case Sally is the shebang master.

Once everyone's mix is in, Sally will give each person one copy of the shebangs that came in and then send them out - so you make so many copies of your one CD and end up with, say maybe 8-14 copies of CDs with different music from your fave TCers in return.

It's a bit of work, but it's well worth it as you'll have LOTS of new music to tinker with, and likely some familiar old favorites.

message 21: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments WHAT?! I send stuff to Canada all the time. CDs and books and it's like maybe $5.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Nah, she's right. A friend of mine from BC used to order stuff from Amazon and have it shipped to my house in order to duck the exorbitant shipping costs.

message 23: by smetchie (last edited May 11, 2010 07:26AM) (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I don't think it would be 5lbs. Especially if you use sleeves. I send my friend books all the time, which weigh more than the shebangs, and it's never more than $5. He's in Toronto, though. Do you think that's why it's cheaper?

message 24: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
It is less than 2 lbs, maybe even less than 1. Were talking seven little discs of plastic and some paper.

And Kev, one arm = slow typing, or fast typing w/o punctuation or caps.

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'm sitting this one out so that someone new has room.

Barb, we might be able to find a way for me to bring your shebang to the US. My sisters (who live in Toronto) are meeting me in Winnipeg in mid-June.

message 26: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments SLEEVES is definitely the way to go... NO cases. They fall apart after one day. Bleh.

message 27: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I really wouldn't mind doing some extra mix if we were to decide to do more than the standard 8 (or whatever it is these days).. I mean, it's just a matter of making a few more copies. Developing the first one is where all the work is.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Heidi wrote: "SLEEVES is definitely the way to go... NO cases. They fall apart after one day. Bleh."

I was going to go with sleeves, then opted for thin-line jewel cases.

D'oh!

Misha wrote: "I've only done two of these, but it seems we generally start out with a couple of suggested themes, but there are always people who go their own way. If anyone else wants to try mine, I'd love to s..."

The problem with themes or suggested themes is trying to make songs fit where there is no fit. What's wrong with forging our own paths?

If I'm thrown a curve and have to deviate from my standard three-chords-and-a-cloud-of-ozone guitar ramalama, anything that might make a Catholic school list of banned records, or virtually any song running on muscular power pop hooks or Stonesy twang, I'm sunk.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Misha wrote: "On the other hand, the suggested themes usually are open to broad interpretations. It's a challenge to the shebanger to come up with something creative. Some of us like being thrown a curve and see..."

No, no, I understand. I just could never hit the curve. I prefer the friendly confines of a rut.

message 31: by Zen (new)

Zen (zentea) | 515 comments To recap some commentary from ya'll:

1.
"[Sally:] you could be the drummer for def lepard while breastfeeding" - Kevin

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

2.
Sun/Moon/Stars theme =
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot ("I like big butts and I cannot lie...")
Stars In Your Eyes - Air Supply

Looks like a body-parts theme to me!

3.
"I prefer the friendly confines of a rut."

I think this is a great theme suggestion!

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Heidi wrote: "Gail wrote: "Humph!"

Thanks Heidi, maybe one day I will. :)

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Gretchen, my theme has to do with attention spans, and my attempt to challenge such. I won't divulge anything further right now.

message 34: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Misha wrote: "On the other hand, the suggested themes usually are open to broad interpretations. It's a challenge to the shebanger to come up with something creative. Some of us like being thrown a curve and see..."

Yeah. I like suggested themes because I have trouble getting started. I might use yours, Misha. Or I might try "Sprinklers" whatever that means!

message 35: by Heidi (last edited May 11, 2010 07:12PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Oh you guys... on the ball and such. I haven't a theme yet, and I'm totally okay with that! :)

smetchie | 4034 comments Gus wrote: "Gretchen, my theme has to do with attention spans, and my attempt to challenge such. I won't divulge anything further right now."

Oh wouldja pleeeeeeeeeease? I need inspiration! Otherwise you're getting the theme I'm working on now which is: "Suck it!"

message 37: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments I rather liked Zen's "The ficus told me to do it" suggestion.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Gretchen, I think the "Suck It!" theme would work quite nicely.

OK, basically, my theme is "long-assed songs for the attention-span challenged." Basically, it's songs that are at least 8 minutes long. I promise, no prog-rock epics of lands of mystical yore and 30-minute organ solos.

message 39: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Thanks for telling me Gus. I hate not knowing.

message 40: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I'll just butt in here with my own "Old Boyfriends shebang, since I would need help burning CDs on my own...

"Hotel Chambermaid" Graham Parker and the Rumour
"Steam Roller," James Taylor
"California Man," Cheap Trick
"Colours," Donovan
"Romeo and Juliet," Dire Straits
"Desperado," Linda Ronstadt
"Amnesia," Pousette-Dart Band
"Swamp," Talking Heads
"Only The Good Die Young," Billy Joel
"Refugee," Tom Petty
"Shattered," Rolling Stones
"The Best of Everything," Tom Petty

Oh, tell me about it. I had such a crush on him in college. He hasn't aged that well, but he still is lovely.

message 46: by smetchie (new)
