Children's Books discussion

I am inspired to post this because at the park, ds said, "Ants talk through smell." I was like, "Where did you learn that?" He said "Andrew Lost". I did NOT like the Andrew Lost books very much, but I thought it was interesting that he remembered.
Maybe we will have to continue them!

My personal favorite is "The Magic School Bus" series. It is so much fun.

My grandson and I have read so many of these that I couldn't begin to count them, but 2 of our favorites are Germs Make Me Sick! and What Happens to a Hamburger?.

I am a HUGE Steve Jenkins fan. He creates this amazing picture books, like What Do You Do With Tail Like This? and Actual Size (which my preschoolers love!). His text is usually brief, so you can read it aloud, but he includes lots of "extra" info in the back about all the animals he's featuring, so if you want to learn more you can. When we studied the letter "I" in my class the theme was illustrator, and the class voted on four illustrators to focus on that week. Steve Jenkins was one of them!

That reminds me of another series: books by Robert E. Wells. He has nice books that explain difficult concepts.

We have "What's Smaller Than A Pygmy Shrew?"
and "How Do You Lift a Lion?"

Steve Jenkins' books are fantastic, and we have enjoyed reading Robert E. Wells' books as well.

I am with Kirei Andrew Lost and Magic School Bus are really cute books and have a lot to say about science. DK Publishing has a series of factual books on topics like Mammals, Dinosaurs or even Wild Cats. National Geographic also make these little magazines for 3-6 year olds that has some excellent photos and stories. We used these as carry around books when my son was younger. He loved the pictures and they were great to take in the car or to a restaurant.

I can't think of a particular series... I really loved the biography of Gregor Mendel ("The father of genetics") Gregor Mendel: The Friar Who Grew Peas and think it's wonderful for science!

My ultimate favorite science book combines poetry, with fact and super illustrations is Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow

Other recent ones I like are:

and a series entitled Scientists in the Field with two titles being:
Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion
The Frog Scientist

I loved that one, too! I found it at the library while searching for something else, and even though my students and I weren't studying oceans at the time I just had to bring it in and share it with them. They loved it :)
