It occurs to me that giving away free books and loudly and publicly praising ebook piracy works....
This is not because of the argument being made (which is that pirates will become fans and buy books because they could get it free but feel so warm and fuzzy toward the author that they decide to pony up).
No, it's because the pirates generate publicity everywhere for Cory Doctorow, mentioning how good he is, how nice, how generous, and how extensively pirated and yet profitable (so he must be a really good read).
When thousands of people sing your praises to honest readers, it's like free advertising.
That does not mean that the same model would work for 100,000 of the rest of us. It's the promotional equivalent of a legal Ponzi scheme.
