Totally Trashy discussion

Okay, it's June 1st-let the trashy discussion begin! I bought this book a few years ago at a library book sale knowing it was one of the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die.

Has anyone started?

I started yesterday. It is one of those books where I fear someone reading it over my shoulder on the train. *blush* ;)

Ha! Although I'm sure it's not the raciest thing on the train these days!

I think all those women with the quilted book covers are probably reading something much racier and much trashier.

I actually have a quilted book cover my mother made me if you'd like to borrow it! I agree-I think those covers hide all kinds of bodice ripping smut!

On a random side note a woman at work (someone brand new) was reading in the staff lounge and I asked her about the book and she said it was a collection of erotica written by Black authors. Not quite what I picture myself reading during lunch at work but if I did I can't imagine I'd tell someone I barely know what it really was. Weird.

I'm having a hard time getting into this one. Was it slow starting for you?

My opinion of the book seems to vary by chapter. Some chapters bore me to tears and others are more interesting.

I put it aside for a few days to finish another book for a book club and just picked up Fear of Flying again.

I'm having a hard time too Lynn. You'd think something so trashy would be a little more engaging! My friend said she read it several times when she was younger and although it's dated she said it was entertaining. This might be a time I need to get the audio too so I can get myself into it faster. Right now I've only made it through about 12 pages. Not good!

Funny you should mention audio. I just checked my library online to see if it was available. Unfortunately not.

I'll keep plugging away. Maybe a glass of wine will help.

I was all excited that the library had a downloadable audio version but it's checked out. I put it on hold but who knows when I'll get it.

We'll have to pick something more exciting for the next time.

I'm making a little headway-I'm about 120 pages in. Can't say I love it but there are some things that are amusing.

I haven;t touched this book in days. I keep getting distracted by other books I have to read. :)

That's what I did all last week. Over the weekend I decided to buckle down and try to plow through it so I can reward myself with something I'd rather read. I'm afraid that we've totally defeated the purpose of this group with this book!

Maybe we can all just throw this trashy read in the trash. ;)

I agree. And in place of this I vote for Jackie Collins' Married Lovers. Just by the cover it looks like it will be an excellent fit. While I have not read many of her books, I will say she does deliver.

And I read she said one of the main characters is based on Craig Ferguson - love him!

I know I already posted this in my review but figured I'd make it official here for all posterity.

I finished the book (finally) but didn't enjoy it at all. It was totally boring and pathetic and pure torture. I guess I can see how it could have been seen as shocking for it's time but in present day it's just pathetic and annoying and not the least bit sexy.

The main character spends most of the book wondering "who am I if I don't have a man? What does my life mean?" How that was supposed to be the example of a liberated woman is beyond me. She goes from bad relationship to bad relationship, never able to be without a man. It was like really bad chick lit without any likable characters or redeeming qualities. Ugh

Okay-enough on that!

I'm up for reading Married Lovers I don't think I've ever read a Jackie Collins book but I have no doubt that her stuff is trashy enough for us! I'll start a new thread an invite people.

Okay, I got Married Lovers from the library last night (sorry Jessica-I think Weymouth only had one copy!) Of course I'm in the middle of 4 other books but I figure I'll be ready whenever we decide to start (maybe July 1st?)
