East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I'm going to re-read it this summer anyway, but it would be fun to have fellow readers!
I nominate Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Technically it's only 592 pages.... but I hope that's close enough to 600 to count :)
I will second Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I plan on reading it this summer, but I am intimidated by its sheer mass.

My nomination: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy"
I'm reading Anna Karenina now!! I just reached the halfway point. It only took like.. three weeks.. -cough- It takes awhile to read because the Russian names are confusing. But I third Anna Karenina!
Oh, this is a wonderful idea! I wanted to do one this summer as well. Two of mine have already been nominated, so I will go with:Vanity Fair
This is a great idea! I don't have any in mind that I'd like to nominate, but I'll probably read along, which will be a first for me (I usually don't read the group reads while they're going on--I still have nightmares about assigned readings in school!).
So if I counted right there is one spot left. If so I would like to nominate Shogun by James Clavell.
A Suitable Boy It's size is more than intimidating. It has been languishing on my shelf for many a long year.

Nominations are OVER! I'll create the poll. I think that for this, I will make a poll for the top 3 winners. We'll see how it turns out.

I read AK when I was in high school, around the same time the Oprah book club was reading it (which my mom took part in). She printed out a bookmark with all the major character names and short descriptions, which was really helpful. Here's the link if you're interested:

Tara--You can vote for your selection in the polls section. Anna Karenina is actually winning right now :)
The winner is Anna Karenina! There were plenty of people who voted for East of Eden and some of the other selections..so feel free to start threads for those to see if people want to read them with you.

So, in addition to our group reads every month, we'll have a Tackle a Thick Book in the Summer group read that will span July and August. It will just be a way for us to motivate each other to read those thick books that we don't have time for during the rest of the year.
The book should be over 600 pages. We will nominate in this thread starting today. I'll take 10 nominations and then we will vote.
Let the nominations begin..
