This book is a little confusing with some of the worldbuilding, but I loved it all the same. I love Kate Daniels, and I think the creatures are pretty distinct. The vampires are creeptastic.
This isn't the best of the series, but I know what you mean about the world building. In the Kate series you are litterally dropped into the middle of her world, and spend a lot of the novel playing catch up.
when i first started magic bites, it was so har to get into it, but i was determined to finish they book, besides it wasnt that long and i really ended up liking it. i mean halfway through i liked the second half of the book more. i loved the characters. i admit it was hard understanding a little bit b/c of the workd building but it was so worth it, b/c this series is amazing.
I just finished the book and loved it!The world is so intriguing with the mix of modern technology and magic. Very cool!
Love the shapechangers and their whole society. Glad we got a glimpse into their lives at the Keep. Hope we see lots more of that in future books.
I love Curran!!! He's defo among my fave males ever!
Didn't expect Bono to be the upir which was a nice surprise. I suspected Crest.
Loved the fight scenes, especially the end. I can't get enough of blood and gore. LOL
I loved
! I have read four of the books. I enjoyed the banter between Kate and Curran. I agree with everyone that it was a little confusing at first but then I fell in love with the characters. Glad I picked it up even though I didn't know the author. Sometimes thats how you find a new book or series you fall in love with.
I've read about a lot of people not getting into the first book. There's a girl in another group I'm in who had started Magic Bites twice and gave up each time. When we told her how good the series became, she tried again, and now she raves about the series and is in love with Curran. (Aren't we all!)
See, the first book is sort of a hurdle. The romance is scarce and I wasn't keen either but when I finished the series and read it again it was all fine.

I first started listening to the audiobooks, the first to me was ok but with each book it got better and better. I love me Kate and Curran together.
Like I said I don't have a problem with the first book. Maybe it is because I read "A Questionable Client" first or because I'm not interested in a romance storyline or I don't know... I already started the second book. :-)
I like that Magic Bites doesn't rely on romantic tension to start the series. Nothing wrong with romance (my favorite genre), but I don't need romance in an urban fantasy book for it to be appealing, especially with the writing that Ilona Andrews is capable of.
I really like the banter Ilona Andrews write. If you have gone to their blog you will see it comes naturally to them. This series is one of my favourite for that reason.

I know what you mean Irene. The banter warms my heart. Plus it comes naturally to then so it doesn't feel forced or faked.
I wasn't sure about this book at first either - it wasn't what I expected. I didn't like the vampires at first, but Kate grew on me. When see said "Here Kitty Kitty, I was sold! Ilona and Gordon have become my favorite writing team, and I have read just about everything the have written and have not been disappointed.
Hello, I'm new to this series, haven't even really finished the first book yet but I couldn't get the inconsistency out of my head so that I could enjoy the rest of the book. It was so weird one minute Curran is all like I bet Kate's boyfriend Crest is the killer and she's like no way but let's find out. And then they test him and blam he's pure human and Curran's all "keep your hunches to yourself lady". It was his hunch damn it. I hate when editors dont catch this stuff. No matter how awesome the book is one little detail like that totally spoils it for me.
Just finished Magic Bites and I love Kate's character - her snarkiness and interactions with Curran are hysterical.I was also confused at first with the world building but as everything is ultimately explained as the book progresses, I actually became more immersed in the world as I waited eagerly for the explanations.
Yeah, you kind of get thrown into the world headfirst. I enjoyed the distinctive feel of the story though.
