Andrez (andrez-ssi) how are your bookshelves? Are they organized meticulously or are they in a total disarray?

I once tried to give each series I have on my to-read shelf its own shelf, but I gave up when the bookshelves wouldn't stop growing.

Now my bookshelves focus mainly on
a) genres (anything-supernatural, books-dealing-with-serious-issues, classics, paranormal, romance, sci-fi, teen-chick-lit, urban-fantasy)
b) authors who write different series which I plan to read all (cate-tiernan, cecily-von-ziegesar, kelley-armstrong, lisi-harrison, nora-roberts, etc.)
c) organization (2010-to-read, 2011-to-read, buy-on-amazon, faraway-read, paperback-release, waiting-to-be-released, series, part-of-a-series, single-books, what-to-order-next, giveaway-at-tauschticket)
d) for the blog (review-for-blog, review-wishlist, review-edit, review-to-come)
e) format (anthologies, bind-up, boxed-set)
f) others (read-in-Korean, read-in-German, re-read)

Hope it helped.

Angela B I don't have a large bookshelf fo it's a big mess :)
Hopefully I'll have room to get a nice bookshelf soon which I will organize

message 5: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) thanks gin, but i was tlking of my literal chaotic bookshelves on my room. those are good tips though

message 6: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) My bookshelves in my house vary.

I have my children's books grouped together. My son has one shelf in his bookcase with his books, there is a 6' shelf in the hall between the kids' room with two shelves dedicated to their books. The shelf above that is where my cookbooks live. The two shelves above that are designated as art/pictures so that it doesn't get too top-heavy.

The booksshelf in my office (only 3' high) is chaos. It's some of my children's chapter books, then just chaos.

Downstairs by the laundry room is semi-organized chaos. On this shelf are some series I've read and not willing to get rid of, and a host of books I inherited when my grandma died. They are mostly Christian lit, with some Depression-era books thrown in.

My other two 6' shelves that are closest to my room are organized by author and when I don't have a host of books by one author, they are broken down by genre.

HMMMM - I was thinking I'd pared my books down pretty well, but I guess I DO have a significant amount of house-space dedicated to keeping them.

message 7: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) hehe sometimes you just have to write it down

message 8: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) I envy those who have numerous bookshelves. I have one bookcase. I am already doubling up the shelves. This is when I know that I have to pare down my library. I pretty much keep mine altogether.

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 130 comments My shelves are a mess since I moved 1 1/2 months ago. I had them all neatly arranged at my old place, but we had to fit both of our books and such in the two bookshelves when we moved in together. I had to double up one shelf.

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela B When I was getting ready to move cross country I gave my sister every book I owned that I had already read (which wasn't too many cuz I gave ones to her before when I moved in with my fiance) and then well I was unemployed I sold most my read books to get new books so I have a total of 40 books I've only read 3 of them :)

Oh man, sorry, Leo!! Well, I can't give you a tip about organizing bookshelves at home anyway, because my bookshelves at home are a big mess.

message 12: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol mine too

message 13: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I can't pare mine down much more - I already donated a trunk full (as in my Camry's trunk - FULL) when we finished our basement last year. And I'm still kicking myself for letting some of those go. I'm a purger by nature - I throw and donate like a madwoman. But books I hoard...

(which is why I need my Kindle!)

message 14: by Jen (new)

Jen (In the Closet With a Bibliophile) (Jen_thebibliophile) | 300 comments I horde everything! I hate to throw things out or give things away. I especially cannot part with my books. Oh, the woes of a bibliophile!

I have 6 shelves.

One shelf is all paranormal romance and it is huge! I use it as my king bed headboard. It also has a stack of my biology and science text books. And a section has a stack of jeans, overflow from dresser and all of my scrapbook albums on the bottom.

I have one that is chick lit that I and the left Behind Series. It has has my language books It.MyOb, and oprah boom club books.

My other shelf is erotica and BDSM and yes, Christian books for research and from classes. I also have a small collection of bibles and a Koran on this shelf. I know odd. There is a small section of travel books as well.

One shelf has all of my native American books and signed books. Also, greek mythology and philosophy.

Then I have those cube things you can stack up. Two of the large ones hold YA books, and movie books (like The Mummy) and behind them are books that I bough at the library for dirt cheap for rainy day something I'll take a chance on reads.

My last shelf has Harry Potter and historical fiction and alot of sappy romance books. And books my mom used to own, books on fish for my tank, just random books.

My boys have 3 shelves. Young kid books, the other is chapter books, and the big one has random odd and huge books along with colors and coloring books.

Yup, lots if books in this house!

When we moved 5 yrs ago the big selling point of the house for me was its many built in book shelves. I made one room in the basement my library and all but one wall (so far) has bookshelves. I keep my books alphabetical by authors - but separated into 3 categories - Fiction (largest), non-fiction (2nd largest) and then religious (3 shelves)and cook books (1 shelf) maybe I should have been a librarian. But that way I can find a favorite author and reread or find out if I have already bought and read a specific book. My sewing room (also in basement) has a walk in closet and I put 2 6' tall bookcases in there along with lg plastic bins (stacked about 4 high)of fabric and yarn, and projects I hope to get to some day. 1 bk case has knit and crochet patterns and books of them. The other is full of paperbacks I haven't read (mostly Harlequin). In my sewing room are 3 4' bookcases with more patterns and 1 case of Hardcover books waiting for me to read. All of that is just the basement. Maybe I'd better just stop there.

Heather (nickyblue7) i have a 3' bookcase that i got maybe a month ago and its already filled up with all of my books that were lying around on the floor (which there was no more after that but theres a ton now) and i have a 9' bookcase and i am almost finished filling up my last empty one now. All of the books r in no real order except the series.

message 18: by Andrez (new)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I forgot to mention the piles of book on my scrapbook table. Which is a dining room table with two leaves in it. I just don't know where to put them and I would also have to make room for them.

message 20: by **Carla** (new)

**Carla** My book shelf isn't overly large because I borrow most books from the library for family and friends. But for what I do have I have set up for seires books together and then aside from that everything else(this is the way I have done it since I was kid with my kids books) I order them biggest/tallest to smallest lol...then I also have a shelf dedicated to holding all of my borrowed books.

message 21: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ bookshelves. i have one bookshelf with hardcovers on the bottom shelf. paperbacks on the top shelves. i have a shelf in the middle of books i'd like to read.
