I would like to nominate Vicious Circle (Persephone Alcmedi, #1) by Linda Robertson Vicious Circle (Persephone Alcmedi, Book 1) by Linda Robertson.

From the Publisher:

"Being a witch doesn't pay the bills, but Persephone Alcmedi gets by between reading Tarot cards, writing her syndicated newspaper column, and kenneling werewolves in the basement when the moon is full — even if witches aren't supposed to mingle with wolves . . ."

Just finished Vicious Circle and it was one of the best first books that I've read lately. Seph lives in a world peopled with magic, witches, werewolves, and vampires. No spoilers, but a strong heroine, memorable characters, and an ending that will have you dashing out for the second book in the series, which I have also just completed, and which I found even better than the first book. Great read for lovers of urban fantasy.

My second nominee is Dark Protector (Paladins of Darkness, #1) by Alexis Morgan Dark Protector (Paladins of Darkness, Book 1) by Alexis Morgan. I haven't read this book, but have heard good things about this series.

From the Publisher:

"Devlin Bane: Born a Paladin, he is a member of an ancient band of warriors locked in a centuries-old war against evil.

His destiny: To die over and over again to protect mankind from the Others, only to be revived each time by his mortal Handler.

But his fierce strength and courage cannot save him from gradually becoming one of the monsters he was born to destroy.

Dr. Laurel Young, who has spent years training to become a Handler, must remain detached from her patients. But each time she revives the darkly compelling Devlin Bane, he claims a little more of her soul and incites in her desires that grow wilder and wilder -- even as he inches closer to losing his humanity. As the war against the Others grows more desperate, Laurel and Devlin can't help but give in to the fierce hunger that's sizzled between them for so long. Now they'll face the ultimate battle together -- to save a dark, passionate love that goes against every rule as they join forces to fight an enemy who is closer than they ever imagined...."

My first nom is going to be the first in a series that just came highly recommended to me by Sam.

Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1) by Lisa Kleypas

When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan.

Wealthy beyond most men’s dreams, Cam has tired of society’s petty restrictions and longs to return to his “uncivilized” Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship—but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter…

--------------------------------------------------

And for my second nom, author Lisa Shearin has been recommending her writing pal and friend, Rob Thurman for a while now. So, I figured I'd give her a chance sometime this year.

Nightlife by Rob Thurman Nightlife (Cal and Niko Leandros, #1) by Rob Thurman

In New York, there's a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side. Of course, most humans are oblivious to this, but Cal Leandros is only half-human. His father's dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares-and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal.

He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal's dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they've always wanted him: He is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal's life...
