Another book that provides a great deal of insight into Iran, particularly the dominant sect of Islam in that country, is The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future. Professor Nasr does an excellent job explaining the origins of Shiism, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the conflict between Shiites and the more mainstream Sunni Islam.
I commend The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future to anyone seeking to understand Islam and its impact on our world.

Taheri brings a great deal of detailed analysis to the creation of the current Iranian nightmare but also helps the reader understand the many factions and feuds that exist within modern Islam. I have to say, it is not a comforting read and leaves me fearful that those who we are attempting to engage in Tehren are not simply thugs but modern incarnations of a neo-fascist state who would rather take the whole world down with them than work to live peacefully with other nations. And I understand that much more clearly why Israelis are as fearful as they are of a nuclear Iran -- it is not just crazy rhetoric; it is a murderously clever collection of madmen spouting the rhetoric and will carry it out the first chance they are given -- IF they are given that chance.
