It doesn't really surprise me, because the iPad is catering to a completely different crowd than the eBook readers have so far. Now you are talking about your general computer population who has long gotten used to downloading everything from the web for free, whether it's music, games, videos and now, naturally, books.

I'm also concerned about a conflict of interest with Google. If their core business is search and their core revenue is from advertising, high traffic sites where lots of people go to browse and download "free" content is a goldmine.
Illegally uploaded ebooks are the perfect content. The right "size", likely to cause a visitor to linger for minutes on a site instead of seconds...
Does it amount to tortious interference with the publishing industry? I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it!
