Once Upon A Fairy Tale discussion

I am reading which I won from goodreads. I'm up to about chapter 5 and I am enjoying so far, but I think I need to read more. I love the idae of the book but I'm not sure about what age to put the book at yet.

Im reading Spells its the sequel to wings . its a book about faerys and i love the storyline and the way the faerys arent typical !!

I'm reading Beauty's Punishment by Anne Rice (written under another name) its the sequel to the claiming of sleeping beauty. I wouldn't suggest it to children (AT ALL) or anyone who isn't into S&M erotic tales. It's very graphic but also intriguing. I wont go into details but i suggest reading the 1st chapter of claiming before you buy it because of all the people i've talked to, most couldn't stomach it.

I just finished The Goose Girl which was very good, though the beginning was a little slow, and at first I thought it was going to be stereotypical, but it played out much better than I thought! Right now I am reading The Coyote Road (not strict retellings of fairy tales but interesting retellings of concept stories that stand the test of time) and also The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales--- ironic in that much of it is from the 17th- 18th centuries, and progresses to stories from as recent as 1989, so perhaps it isn't too modern, but compared to the Grimms I suppose it is! One that I read back in September was Ash by Malinda Lo which also surpassed my expectations. It might be controversial to some, as two people of the same sex fall in love, but I thought it was excellent and very well written. I will have to check out some of the books you guys mentioned--- I'm hooked on all things fairy tale!

Ok, still reading the Coyote Road and there is a retelling of the Princess and the Pea in there called The Senorita and the Cactus Thorn by Kim Antieau for any who like the Princess and the Pea.

I am really liking this collection of stories and I've decided I want to read all of the Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling collections. They have an adult fiary tale series which includes all kinds of retellings. I am going to read Black Heart, Ivory Bones next.

Right now, I need something light and entertaining while I read an academic book about a Scottish witchcraft trial, so I am listening to Alex Flinn's "Beastly". It's an updated version of the classic "Beauty and the Beast", set in New York.

I had seen the film, but I must admit the book, thus far, is faring better in my estimation. For me, the film lacked punch but the audiobook is holding up.

oh i totally agree... i actually watched the movie first and then came across the book and was hesitant on reading it ... i thought "i didn't even really like the movie should i even read the book?" and then got really bored one day and decided to download the e-book version and honestly i was surprised... i liked it a lot better than the movie and i think the movie lacked substance that the book better portrayed. I like the book Cinder ... its an interesting twist on cinderella... but its really good!!

I'm currently reading "Prince of Wolves" and "Heir Untamed." Both books are apart of a series. I would so totally recommend them for anyone who likes a little edge to their royal romantic love story. The 1st books is about a werewolf prince that finds his mate and its a really sweet book that keeps you on your toes and it is also very funny! The second book is about a photographer who is paid to go to this tiny country Latalava and photograph the royal family. upon her arrival she meets a cute, polite, totally sweer prince second in line for the thrown of his country and an arrogant, wild, and outdoorsy head of security. But is everything what it seems to be in the hidden life of the Latalava royals?

Currently reading the Iron Fey series ( Iron King, Iron Daughter, Iron Queen, Iron Knight) by Julie Kagawa. Good so far!

I just finished Soman Chainani's The School for Good and Evil. I really enjoyed it. It was a easy and fun page-turner. Just what I was looking for.

I just finished that series recently. It was a very fun read.

The last fairytale related story I've read recently was Stardust by Niel Gaiman. I don't like the book as much as I love the movie, but it is still a good story and there is something about his writing that I really like.
Right now I'm reading the Fruits Basket, Volume 01 series. I'm up to book 15 and it has been really good so far.

I also didn't like Stardust when I read it, probably because I loved the movie and didn't realize they don't have much in common. I plan on reading the book again in order to enjoy the fairy tale motifs rather than read the plot of the movie in a novel.

I agree with you. This was my second reading of Stardust. I think that because I am older and more familiar with many of the fairytale motifs I was able to enjoy it more.

I look forward to reading it again then :)

I'm struggling to engage with Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr though it is read beautifully by Alyssa Bresnahan - the story seems to be missing something. It's about high school student, Aisling, and her struggles to ignore the fairy world, while being courted by the Summer King in search of his queen.

what series should I start with first? If there is anything similar to Once upon a time where all the characters are together, that would be fantastic :)

I agree! I forced myself to finish this book. It wasn't a good read at all, but had the potential to be. Maybe because it just wasn't aimed at my age group :) however, Twilight sucked me in.

You could try The Sisters Grimm series. It is middle grade but a really fun series. Here's the first book. The Fairy-Tale Detectives

I am currently reading "Sleeping Beauty" by Jenni James. This is the second book in the Jenni James Fairytale collection - A great series I would recommend reading. The tale goes deeper into detail than the original.

Book 1 in the collection is "Beauty and the Beast", but the 1st book I read was "Cinderella" because "Cinderella "is my favoirte tale.

I read the first three chapters of "Sleeping Beauty" twice because I wanted to make sure I understood who cast the sleeping spell and why the witch was involved.

Red Delicious. Sort of anti-Urban Fantasy, dispensing with the tropes. Heroine is not a nice person, for instance. Interesting reversal of the typical kick-ass good girl protagonist. Exciting and readable.

I just finished the first book of divergent and I am extremely satisfied with the book normally I don't like to read dystopian type books but this book was so amazing I couldn't put it down. People gave me strange looks in the hall ways for I got so into the hook that I must have gave off wired facial expressions. But that's what happens when you read a good book right ? Or dose that only happen to me ?

I have just finished reading the Grimm diaries. it is all about fairy tale characters coming together but they have been twisted. They are an awesome read but the plot lines need a lot of consentration

I am reading the book defy and so far it has been wonderfly dramatic, however it is getting more and more pridictable as I reach the end of the book. without even looking at the end I already know exactly how it will end plan is once I am done with defy I will begin to read daark curiosity. the second book to the madmans dayghter series which I am reluctant to read for the first book made me so mad and yhe ending was ok I don't know why yhe author would write a second book. I am going to read it based off of the hope that for the first time in history the second book will be better than the first

I am reading The Real Boy by Anne Ursu, which is supposed to be something of a Pinnochio retelling, but I'm not really seeing that. Has anyone else read this? I'm enjoying it, though, probably even moreso than her critically acclaimed Breadcrumbs. I adopted a second cat last week so I'm also reading Cat vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat, as well as finishing up How Jesus Became God:. I'm making SLOW progress through The Creative Life: True Tales of Inspiration and The Barter and rereading Plover Landing. As you can see, I am not able to be monogamous with my books!

Recently read the Doctrine of Labyrinths series by Sarah Monette, which was beyond amazing. Still trying to work my way through Catherine Asaro's books about the Ruby Dynasty, but some are okay and some are really meh.

I am reading if I stay it is really good so far I love the fact that she can see what is going on while she is in a coma I picked up this book cause I was planing on watching the movie and like all book loveres I wanted the right to judge

In the attempt to find some new authors I like (new to me) just read two truly awful books in a row, Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow and Carousel Tides by Sharon Lee. I have got to find some more authors who aren't terrible!

I'm currently reading From a High Tower which is supposed to be a Rapunzel retelling. That's just the opening of the book. It's really a story about a female Air Mage who joins a Wild West show in 19th century Germany with a Rapunzel opening and a bit of Hansel and Gretel thrown in.

I'm currently reading Heartless. This will be my first fairytale retelling novel. And so far it's hard for me to put it down. I love it. Ms. Meyers knows how to paint a picture with her words.
